Brazil unveils ambitious new climate plan to target zero deforestation
Brazilian leaders unveiled a new national climate plan recently to protect the country’s forests as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Since 2008, Brazil has not updated its primary plan to fight climate change. The government has now created a new plan for 2035 and is expected to have lowered its emissions significantly by then.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 67 per cent compared with 2005 levels.
Forty per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil are generated by trees being razed, often to create more agricultural land. Lula has pledged to reduce deforestation to zero by 2030.
They couldn’t pledge to stop deforestation simply for the sake of the environment and protecting the Amazon and leave the cult out of this? Of course not.
