Sending Social Worker on 911 Call Goes as You Would Expect

Liberals want local police defunded on the grounds that law enforcement is racist. They have called for cops to be replaced by social workers. Let’s see how that works out in real life.

Mass Daily News reports on the result of a 911 call in Boston last Saturday:

They called in a worker from Boston’s BEST program, a co-responder model where master’s-level mental health professionals ride alongside officers to de-escalate crisis calls.

The call was from a guy who reported an imaginary threat of people coming to kill him.

The clinician talked to the man through the door for the better part of an hour. Then he opened it and attacked, striking both the clinician and an officer with what Police Commissioner Michael Cox described as “some sort of sword.” Officers fired a Taser and their weapons. The man was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead. Several other officers and two EMS workers were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fumed the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association,

“The overzealous DA should take a bow now that cops are waiting to get stabbed before taking steps to protect themselves.”

Two weeks previously, DA Kevin Hayden sent officers to arrest their fellow cop Nicholas O’Malley at his home rather than at the police station, as if wanting it done in front of his wife and kids.

The charge was manslaughter — for shooting a carjacker who had rammed a police cruiser and had 47 prior charges. Hayden said it wasn’t self-defense. The message to every cop in the city was unmistakable: act, and we’ll come for you.

[Boston Mayor Michelle] Wu publicly thanked Hayden for the prosecution.

As for replacing police with social workers,

Her campaign platform called for diverting 911 mental health calls away from police…

You can have public safety, or you can have Democrat rule. You can’t have both.
