Massive Wave of Primaries Set for Today

Here’s the line-up.
It’s not exactly Super Tuesday, but a wave of important primaries is being decided today. They are:
• Connecticut (governor, U.S. House, and other state races)
• Minnesota (governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House)
• Vermont
• Wisconsin
• Alabama (special primary, U.S. House districts: 1, 2, 6, and 7)
• South Carolina (special Republican primary related to the U.S. Senate seat).
Wisconsin and Minnesota feature two that are very closely watched. Wisconsin’s governor race features Francesca Hong, the DSA-endorsed candidate, vs. David Crowley, the establishment Democrat favorite.
In Minnesota, the Republicans have a competitive Republican Governor contest between Trump-endorsed Mike Lindell and Establishment favorite and Speaker of the House Lisa DeMuth. Democrats will vote in a tight contest between Lieutenant Governor and progressive Peggy Flanagan and more moderate Congresswoman Angie Craig.
In South Carolina, there is a Special Election primary for the Senate seat vacated by Lindsey Graham following his untimely passing.
Time: The chaotic scramble is now down to two unlikely candidates: Francesca Hong and David Crowley. She is a democratic socialist who has rocketed in the polls despite concerns about her viability in November (and her position on, of all things, Thanksgiving). He is a steady-as-she-goes county bureaucrat who suspended his campaign and booked a vacation to Jamaica—before canceling the trip and re-joining the race 10 days later, this time with the backing of the outgoing Governor. (Time.)
The Minnesota governor’s race is described at (MPR.)
Roll Call: The Minnesota primary has perhaps gotten less attention than the intraparty brawl in nearby Michigan, but it again pits two candidates from different wings of the Democratic Party. A similar fight is also taking place Tuesday in neighboring Wisconsin, where Democrats will pick their nominee for governor. In late May, Flanagan won the endorsement of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, as the state’s Democratic Party is known, after Craig opted to compete in the primary without seeking the endorsement. Flanagan has touted her grassroots support and her close ties to organized labor. Craig’s campaign, meanwhile, has argued that she’s the candidate best suited to hold the seat in November — evoking her centrist colleague Rep. Haley Stevens’ contention in the Michigan primary, where she came up short against the more progressive Abdul El-Sayed. (Roll Call.)
