For Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, "Again Is Now"

“Addressing deep intra-party divides over Israel ahead of the general election, Michigan’s Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel urged a private gathering of Jewish Democrats to place the needs of “the rest of humanity” above their own “safety and security.”

As a Gentile who has been watching anti-Semitism grow in America and then explode immediately after October 7, 2023, when Hamas committed the worst atrocity against the Jewish people since the  Holocaust, I am amazed and frustrated that some Jews in the US have thrown Israel under the bus and linked arms with the people who support Hamas, people who not only hate Israel, but hate Jews as well. I could not understand it before October 7th, 2023, but today, it has become dumbfounding.

Take Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D), for example. On August 30, she addressed a group of Michigan Jewish Democrats in Birmingham, Michigan, outside Detroit, and said some pretty outrageous things, saying that Jews should place the needs of humanity above their own safety and security! 

“The Detroit News, Nessel invoked the story of Queen Esther to argue that Jewish Democrats have a “moral imperative to place the needs of the world above even our own self-interest,” urging attendees to “sacrifice the comfort, safety and security and even the very future of our own people in exchange for the opportunity to save the rest of humanity.”

She even evoked climate change in reference to Israel, and, of course, bashed Trump. 

“What good is defending the historic homeland of our ancestors and demanding that candidates acknowledge its right to exist if the planet upon which it rests is no longer inhabitable?” Nessel asked, according to the recording reviewed by The Detroit News. She went on to characterize supporting former President Donald Trump as an “abdication of our responsibilities as Jews,” arguing that Jewish tradition demands “compassionate action toward others” over what she called “blind obedience to the world’s biggest and most dangerous fool.”

Climate change, bejeezus! 

And think what you will about Trump, but he is a supporter of Israel and has done more than any previous president to attack campus anti-Semitism in our universities.

“While Nessel acknowledged the frustration in the room—noting that arguments equating Zionism to racism are often made “by people whose entire understanding of Jewish-Israel history fits neatly into a 47-second TikTok produced by Qatar or Iran” — she also argued that the GOP and its loyalty to Trump poses a great threat and blasted Republicans for focusing on cultural issues like “transgender girls playing JV volleyball” instead of issues like wealth inequality and artificial intelligence.”

She might also have noted that it is the Republican party-not the Democrat party that not only gives more support to Israel, but also pays more attention to problems of anti-Semitism, especially on college campuses, as witnessed by the recent hearings held by the Republican-led House subcommittee on education and the workplace. And yes, they can care about anti-Semitism and men playing women’s sports at the same time.

As a Gentile, I do not accuse Jews of being “self-hating Jews”, a term used by some of my like-minded Jewish friends. Nessel is Jewish, and I am sure that after these remarks, many are calling her by that term. I cannot argue with them. It is one thing to be a critic of Israel’s policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians (which I am not); it is quite another to suggest that the safety and security of Jewish people should take a back seat to “the needs of humanity”.

And just what are the needs of humanity? That the state of Israel should be destroyed by the monsters of Hamas, Hizbollah, and the mullahs in Iran? Do the needs of humanity demand that Jews everywhere be killed?

Since when are people like Hamas, Hizbollah, and the Iranian mullahs on the side of “the needs of humanity”?  Would another Holocaust, one that finished the job once and for all, serve the needs of humanity?  That all Jews in the world disappear?

What kind of talk is this from an attorney general of Michigan who is also Jewish? I realize that several red states, like Michigan and my own state of California, suffer from activist Democrat attorneys general who find all sorts of causes to champion other than putting violent criminals in jail. But this really takes the cake!

Keep in mind that Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was in the audience, no doubt nodding in approval. Keep in mind that Michigan has a large Muslim population, including towns where they dominate, like Dearborn and Hamtramck, communities that are becoming more and more activist and radical. Don’t forget Dearborn’s elected representative, Rashida Tlaib. Imagine the climate for Jews living in Michigan, especially for those living in the greater Detroit-Dearborn area. And this is the kind of support and advice they get from their attorney general, the state’s top law enforcement official, the one who is supposed to protect them, as well as everybody else.

There is no doubt that people like Nessel have come to the conclusion that Israel is an inconvenient nation, an obstacle to better relations with the Arab and Muslim worlds. Apparently, Nessel takes it a step farther. She seems to think that the Jewish people themselves are an obstacle to better relations with the Arab and Muslim worlds. The world would be a better place. Terrorism against all of us would stop. The land from the river to the sea would be a harmonious democracy that lives in peace and friendship with the US and Europe.

If only it weren’t for Israel. If only it weren’t for the Jews.

The “needs of the world” should take priority over their safety and security!

Whatever happened to “never again”? Has Nessel never heard of the phrase and what it means? It means that never again will Jews go to their deaths by the millions like lambs to the slaughter. In that same spirit, it can also mean that Jews and Gentiles will never submit -as she is submitting to a certain faction of the population-in our own country- that has disdain for all of us.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that Jewish self-hatred is a real problem. People like Dana Nessel are a real problem. But what do I know? I am just a Gentile.
