Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop Trail Guide | Hiking & Backpacking in the Ouachita Mountains

Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop Trail GuideThe Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop in the Ouachita Mountains is a rugged 10-mile circuit that combines ridge walking with creekside hiking. The route includes steady climbs, cascading streams, a waterfall with a swimming hole, and several good backcountry campsites.

We hiked the loop as a long day trip, but it can also be done as a moderate overnight backpack. The trail offers a mix of ridge views, shaded valleys, and remote sections of wilderness that highlight some of the best backcountry hiking in Arkansas.

Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop BasicsThe Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop links the Buckeye Mountain Trail with the Caney Creek Trail, connected by a short road walk on Polk County Road 64. Both trailheads are on this rough dirt road, which runs north–south between the Shady Lake Recreation Area and the town of Shady. Sections of the road are steep and washed out, so a high-clearance vehicle is helpful.

We started at the East Caney Creek Trailhead and walked 1.1 miles up the road to the Buckeye Mountain Trailhead. From there we followed the Buckeye Mountain Trail for six miles to its junction with the Caney Creek Trail. We then turned east and followed Caney Creek back to the East Caney Creek Trailhead, completing the loop.
Buckeye Mountain TrailBeginning with the Buckeye Mountain Trail means tackling the toughest climb first. The trail gains nearly 1,200 feet in just over two miles, but the grade is steady and the tread in good condition. At the ridge, the reward is wide views across the Ouachita Mountains.

The trail follows the ridge for almost four miles, with a mix of gentle ups and downs and stretches of rocky, open walking that feel remote and wild. This section can be dry, so carry enough water until you reach Katy Falls.

Near the end of the descent, the trail passes Katy Falls—a highlight of the loop. The cold pool at the base makes for a great swimming spot in summer. From here, it’s a short distance downhill to the junction with the Caney Creek Trail.Caney Creek TrailFrom the Buckeye Trail junction, it’s about four miles along Caney Creek back to the trailhead. The character of the hike shifts here, leaving the ridge for shaded forest and frequent creek crossings. Expect wet feet, especially after rain.

The valley is filled with cascades, pools, and small waterfalls. It’s also the best spot for backcountry camping on the loop, with several flat sites right along the creek.

Past the camping area, the trail climbs gradually away from the water, crossing two low ridges around 8.5 and 9 miles. After a short descent and one final rise, the last half mile drops gently back to the East Caney Creek Trailhead for a total of 10 miles.

Why we loved the Buckeye-Caney Creek Loop

This loop has everything we look for in an Arkansas hike—big climbs, quiet ridges, and cold water swimming holes. The Buckeye Mountain ridge feels remote and rugged, while Caney Creek offers shaded valleys, waterfalls, and excellent places to camp. Whether you tackle it as a long day hike or spread it out as a backpacking trip, the Buckeye–Caney Creek Loop is a rewarding way to experience the Ouachita National Forest.
