Chateau Gaillard has a rich and very dark history. My father and stepmother Cindy have traveled to France 7 times to visit with my family’s French relatives. Those French relatives are the Bossu(s) and Valtille(s). On one of the trips to France, some of the Valtille family took my father and stepmother to see the Chateau Gaillard. My stepmother was shocked to learn about the dark history of this castle. My father on the other hand marveled at its majestic beauty, as it sits on a hill overlooking the countryside. During the tour of the castle, Cindy felt sadness. The locals say that this castle is very haunted, and that the negativity of past deeds lives on within the walls of this castle. Let’s look at some of the history of this fortress.

Château Gaillard was captured in 1204 by the king of France, Philip II, during a lengthy siege. Somewhere in the mid-14th century, the castle was the residence of the exiled David II of Scotland. The castle had many owners during the Hundred Years’ War. Things changed in 1449, when the French king captured Château Gaillard from the English king. After 1449, the castle remained in French ownership. Henry IV of France was set out to demolish Château Gaillard in 1599, while it was in ruins. Luckily, the castle was not demolished, and it was spared, to become a historical landmark by the French Ministry of Culture.

The dark history of this castle, you would think was right out of the Game of Thrones. During the reign of King Philip IV of France, the King kept an eye out on his three princesses named Blanche, Joan and Margaret. There was a rumor afloat that the King’s knights had their way with two of the princesses. The King in turn held a party and ordered his most trusted soldiers to keep a close eye on the princesses and the knights during this party. Little did the knights know they were in extreme danger. The parties at the Parisienne Tower, Le Tour de Nesle were known to be somewhat scandalous. The straight-laced King Philip knew if the rumors were true, he would find out during this party.

As the night went on, it didn’t take much of an observation by King Philip of France’s most trusted soldiers to denounce his daughters-in-law Blanche and Margaret for adultery, and Joan for knowing about it. The French court was anxious to see the outcome of this debauchery. Gautier and Philippe were arrested, and he dealt with them first.
Gautier and Philippe had threatened the King’s bloodline and could be spared no suffering. This was the middle-ages and torturers had plenty of practice. The Knights were interrogated viciously until they admitted their guilt. Then the horror really began. Both were strapped to a torture device called the wheel. Their backs were broken on the wheel. Before they passed out in pain, they were slowly castrated and their ‘parts’ were fed to the castle’s very hungry dogs. Then the torturers poured boiling lead and sulphur on the knights. After all this was done, both knights were beheaded. Their decapitated bodies were dragged through the city of Paris. Afterwards the bodies were skinned and hung on the public gallows for public display and left on the gallows for weeks.

The next punishment was for the three princesses. Terrified, Blanche, Margaret and Joan turned to their husbands to save them. But only Philip vouched for his wife Joan. Joan was placed under house arrest. After a year of campaigning by her loving husband, she was released after spending a short time confined to her home. Blanche and Margaret were sentenced to a life in prison. During their incarceration, their heads were constantly shaved. The dungeon of Château Gaillard, north of Rouen and overlooking the Seine river, would be their prison for the rest of their lives. Philip IV of France died shortly afterwards, in shock on the behavior of Blanche and Margaret.

THE HAUNTING ACTIVITIES:
According to historical accounts, in May 1198, Richard the Lionheart and the laborers working on the castle were drenched in a “rain of blood.” Although some saw it as an evil omen, Richard remained undeterred in his construction efforts.

Beneath the castle’s shiny new stones lies a dark secret. Three medieval princesses, Blanche, Margaret, and Joan—were imprisoned here due to their youthful indiscretions. Their marriages to French nobility led to betrayal and terror. Blanche, in particular, suffered greatly and died within a year of her captivity. Joan was released and placed under house arrest. Shortly afterward she was completely free. Tourists and locals have heard sobbing coming out of the dungeon area. Sometimes screaming can be heard. The apparition of Blanche has been seen in the dungeon and blood is seen dripping down from the top of her head.

Gautier and Philippe have been seen walking about the castle with no heads. High pitched screaming is also sometimes heard. Tourists and locals say that they experience a feeling of dread when entering the castle. My stepmother Cindy felt nauseated while on the castle grounds, but when she was off the castle grounds, she felt normal again. Amelie Alarie, a tourist from Belgium says that she experienced seeing blood dripping from the castle walls. When she saw the blood, she felt light-headed, and she thought she was ready to pass out. When her husband nudged her, she was back to normal, and the blood was gone. Amelie’s husband did not see the blood.
