When I was stationed in Germany from 1974 to 1976, I had a buddy from Rhode Island, his name was Wayne Johnson. Wayne was my roommate two times. Wayne and I, rented a small apartment in Nurnberg, Germany. When I got out of the Army in 1976, Wayne flew into Sacramento and he was my apartment roommate on W Street, Sacramento for about 8 months. Wayne knew I was interested in the paranormal and we always thought our apartment in Germany was haunted, because sometimes we would hear knockings on the walls, and we would see small handprints on the refrigerator. What was unique about our apartment on W Street is that right across the street, at the onramp to San Francisco, some drivers see a phantom woman hitchhiker. It was at this location, a woman hitchhiking to San Francisco from the W Street onramp was picked up by a male motorist and never seen again. Detectives felt she was probably murdered. You can see a write up on this ghost here: www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/haunted-sacramento/

Believe it or not, when Wayne and I lived at this apartment, Patty Hearst and the SLA were right down the street from me, in a safe house. I learned later that Patty Hearst was my neighbor. Another unique thing about W Street is that I discovered that an Oceana High School former student, that I went to school with named Michelle Banta also lived on W Street. Michelle claimed that she saw the ghostly hitchhiker and since she was a woman, stopped her car to give her a ride, only for the hitchhiker to vanish. So, maybe my apartment on W Street wasn’t haunted, but just right across the street the onramp to San Francisco was haunted. My friend Helen Lang also encountered the hitchhiking ghost. As Helen was walking to her car, right behind her was the W Street Onramp Ghost. Helen says that her mouth was opening as if she was talking, but Helen was unable to hear any words from her mouth. The apparition finally just vanished. Helen says that she felt the hitchhiking ghost was trying to tell her something important, like perhaps who her murderer was. Helen is a moderate psychic. Now that you know a few stories about my buddy Wayne Johnson, let’s talk about Wayne’s home state of Rhode Island. Wayne Johnson told me a few ghost stories about Rhode Island, since he visited Fort Wetherill, Jamestown and Belcourt Castle.

Fort Wetherill, Jamestown:
This historic fort is said to be haunted by a phantom dog that has been seen since the Revolutionary War era. Legend has it that British soldiers were terrorized by a black dog that prowled the entire fort. Occasionally, visitors still spot this spectral canine glaring at them before disappearing through a wall. It was also known that the Fort Wetherill Hound confronted a tour guide and growled. After the growling, the hound then bit into the arm of the tour guide. The tour guide felt no pain, the hound’s teeth went right through his arm. The Fort Wetherill Hound was also seen jumping off the high wall of the fort and when the hound landed, he vanished. My sister Sharon when visiting this fort, heard phantom disembodied whispering. Sharon says it sounded like two men talking. Wayne Johnson when visiting this fort, saw 3 darting shadows. After the shadows disappeared, Wayne felt nauseated and dizzy.

Seaview Terrace, Newport:
Recognizable from exterior shots in the gothic horror TV show “Dark Shadows,” Seaview Terrace is considered one of the most haunted houses in Rhode Island. The original owner’s wife, Mrs. Bradley, is often seen playing her favorite Estey organ. Visitors have also reported strange noises, dark shadows, and jiggling door handles. In 1907, whiskey millionaire Edson Bradley built a French-Gothic mansion in Washington, D.C. After disassembling it, he relocated it to the Newport property where Seaview Terrace now stands. Wayne says he drove past this mansion and was in awe of its majestic beauty. Wayne says he has talked with a few people that visited this mansion and they have reported seeing ghostly figures looking out the windows.

The Conjuring House:
The Perron House (aka The Conjuring House), Burrillville: Made famous by the movie “The Conjuring,” this house was home to the Perron family, who experienced terrifying apparitions. Paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren identified the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman, a Satanist who allegedly sacrificed her daughter and bound her soul to the property. Wayne says that the stories of the Conjuring House are made up stories. Wayne has many friends that have taken a tour of the Conjuring House and make claim that it’s not haunted at all. No anomalies in their photographs, no paranormal experiences and no EVPs. Wayne says the only reason why this house is so famous is because of the movie.

Belcourt Castle, Newport:
This mansion is haunted by a phantom monk. Visitors have reported eerie experiences, making it one of Rhode Island’s spookiest locations. Wayne says that he actually saw the apparition of the monk walking down a corridor. The monk looked at Wayne and smiled, then vanished.
