On November 23rd, 2024, Saturday, I was supposed to be in Randsburg, CA to attend a bachelor party for a friend and lead a ghost hunt for 16 members of the wedding party. Due to some logistic issues, I was unable to attend. What got my paranormal antenna in a frenzy is the fact I never heard of this ghost town called Randsburg. I lived for a while in Anaheim with my uncle Rudy Rodriguez and his family. I looked into many paranormal sites in the LA area and never heard of Randsburg. I was going to be flown down from Sacramento International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport and finally to Inyokern Airport. Transportation would be waiting for me, and it would be a 30-minute drive to Randsburg. In fact…….awww…now I get it. It’s actually not in the LA area. In fact, it’s 2 hours and 37 minutes from Los Angeles. I learned that the ghost hunting bachelor party was unsuccessful in capturing any evidence, in fact it was too windy and cold. They still had a good time sight-seeing through the ghost town. After I learned what I missed, or didn’t miss, I wanted to know more about this ghost town. So, doing some research and talking with some people, here is the information that I got about Randsburg.
HISTORY OF RANDSBURG:
Located in Kern County, on a very rural stretch of land between Death Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this old school mining town is a total throwback to the gold rush days. The West in the 1800s was all about the gold rush, and in 1895 Randsburg proved to be major player in the game. Originally named Rand Camp after the mining region in South Africa, the town began to develop throughout the turn of the century, eventually settling on the aesthetic that still lingers to this day. At the community cemetery, you can see memorial stones of unusual and tragic local figures, including Emily Davidson—shot dead on Butte Avenue by her husband in 1897—and William Burro Schmidt, an eccentric miner who once dug a tunnel to nowhere. This strange gold-rush town near the El Paso Mountains in Kern County popped up in 1895. More than 3,500 people lived here in its thriving—and stereotypically lawless—early years. More than 20 bars lined its streets, prostitution thrived, and shootings and stabbings were common. The gold rush boom faded long ago, though enough gold and silver mining opportunities persisted to keep the town alive. Now fewer than 70 residents remain in this ghost town.
HAUNTING REPORTS FROM RANDSBURG, CA
FROM ANONYMOUS:
In 2015, my husband I were traveling south on 395 in CA near Randsburg. It was late afternoon and on the left side of the road stood two miners holding oil lanterns. They looked like they stepped out of the past and appeared to be more of a sepia, fuzzy photograph appearance than full color life. Both of us said, wow, those guys don’t look real. We looked back and they were not there. Researching later, apparently the area is haunted, and people have seen the same apparitions.
FROM DIANE PEARCE, TOURIST:
When I visited Randsburg, many original structures still remain. Derelict miners’ cabins litter the barren hills. At night, a haunting wind howls through the more ramshackle wooden shanties, rattling their corrugated metal siding and roofs. A collapsed mine shaft exists nearby. When the wind blows, you can hear whispering words. During the wind, I heard the following words: Male voice saying: “go back!” Female voice saying: “Diane do you wish to stay here?” Diane says she was pushed and fell on one leg. She believes that a spirit was trying to keep her in Randsburg. Diane says she has no desire to ever return to this ghost town.
FROM DORA NEWCASTLE, TOURIST:
One of the most famous ghosts of Randsburg is the “Miner on the Roof”. This miner ghost sits on top of the roof of The Joint. The ghost is supposedly a disgruntled ex-customer who was told eons ago that he was no longer welcome due to his bad behavior. Dora heard many stories about the Miner on the Roof, but did not encounter this ghost. Dora did encounter a female full body apparition. The apparition had long flowing blonde hair and no eyes. The apparition approached Dora and then faded away.
FROM FRANK SAVINI, TOURIST:
Frank says he is a psychic medium and encountered a ghost named Harry Love. Frank asked for the spirit’s name and the spirit said: “Harry Love”. Harry Love says to Frank: “Looking for Murrieta!” The ghost of Harry Love looked at many buildings before fading away into nothingness. Frank later researched on the Internet and learned that Harry Love was a California Ranger that was assigned to bring back Joaquin Murrieta, the Robin Hood of the West and inspiration for Zorro. There were wanted posters for Murrieta where they were asking for the head of Joaquin Murrieta. Frank also saw a vision of a gunfight on the streets of Randsburg but was unable to identify the gun fighters.
MIRAGE MANIFESTATIONS LA BRANCH:
A cryptid and ghost hunting group called Mirage Manifestations LA Branch investigated the desert in and around Randsburg looking for either the Yucca Man or the Mojave Bigfoot. According to Trevor of this group, both cryptids have been seen near Randsburg. During their investigation, they believe they found a Bigfoot nest.
