Hauntings at the Capital of Torshavn
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 mountainous, volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, positioned roughly halfway between Iceland and Norway, and northwest of Scotland. They are a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. You will find many ghost stories on the Faroe Islands, especially in the capital of Torshavn. One of the ghost stories that originates from Torshavn is the “Missing Man”. This ghost has been seen by dozens of locals and tourists. The missing man is most likely a former Danish official, whose ghost is said to roam the streets. Some locals say that the Missing Man ghost seems to be lost. Then as you visit smaller villages, there are stories of mermen (like Marmennilin) or other sea spirits sometimes blend into the tales around Tórshavn’s harbor and coastal areas.
What is a Marmennilin?
He is described as resembling a human but is significantly smaller with long, distinctive fingers. He lived at the bottom of the sea and was considered a nuisance to fishermen, often ruining their catch. According to legend, a farmer named Anfinn caught the Marmennilin by hooking his hand, bringing him ashore, and keeping him by the fireplace. The merman only ate bait, and when taken fishing, he would point out where the best fish were located, ensuring a great catch, provided he was blessed with the sign of the cross.
The Old Cemetery (Gamli Kirkjugarður):
At this cemetery, many people have seen full body apparitions sitting on tombstones. A famous story about this cemetery is the White Cap Ghost. The story goes that a young girl saw a white cap placed on a tombstone. The girl wanted the white cap, so she stole it. As she looked back there was a ghost at the tombstone where she took the cap and he looked angry. The ghost subsequently haunted the village, forcing the girl to return the cap in silence to avoid a fatal encounter. People visiting the cemetery have also seen a little figure darting around the cemetery. This little figure is about 4 inches high and may be possible some kind of fairy.
The Prefect’s Castle (Amtmansborgin):
The castles legendary ghost is the “Lost Commandant”. Another Danish official that mysteriously died and is now seen as a ghost that seems to be lost. Rumor has it that a strange spell has fallen on some parts of the Faroe Islands and that when it hits an individual, they lose their sense of surroundings. They mysteriously become “lost” and will die in a mysterious way. According to Soren (a local), it’s some kind of curse. Locals and tourists have also seen ghostly sheep along the hillside near the castle. One individual visiting the castle saw 15 sheep grazing along the hillside, they went back to look at the sheep, and the sheep all disappeared.
Hoydalar High School:
Locals have reported that the area around this old school is haunted. It was formerly used as a tuberculosis hospital, and the nearby “doctor’s house” is associated with tragic local histories. Villagers have heard the sound of disembodied coughing and moaning. A local reported that they saw an apparition of a small boy with a broken jaw. His jaw was hanging loose, and his eyes were bulging out. Some people believe this little boy was tortured and died from his injuries.
Klaksvík Tunnels:
Some residents and workers from the 1980s have shared stories of hearing terrifying screaming in these tunnels at night, possibly linked to past accidents. One resident saw an apparition of a man with a broken neck. Travelers often describe the experience of driving through these tunnels as entering an “odd little dreamworld” or a “ghost town” environment. The older, single-lane tunnels are pitch-black, narrow, and damp, creating a naturally unsettling atmosphere that feeds into local ghost stories. The region around Klaksvík is steeped in legends of trolls and supernatural beings. Neighboring areas, like the “Troll Peninsula” (Tröllanes), have long-standing myths about mountain-dwelling trolls who terrorized villagers, contributing to a general cultural sense that the rugged, isolated landscape is inhabited by spirits. The challenging nature of these tunnels—some of which are unlit, one-lane, and require drivers to pull into passing bays to avoid oncoming traffic—creates a high-stress environment that locals and tourists sometimes refer to as “harrowing” or “frightening”. A local who was driving through the tunnels kept envisioning fatal car accidents, which brought on a high level of anxiety.
Múli:
A well-known ghost town on the island of Borðoy. It was abandoned in the mid-20th century, though some buildings remain as seasonal holiday homes. Misty apparitions are sometimes seen. Freja, a local has seen a ghost that is known as “One Eyed Lars”. This ghost has one eye that is shut and he is known to hobble about.
SUPERNATURAL BEINGS THAT HAUNT THE FAROE ISLANDS
The Hidden People (Huldufólk):
Elusive, grey-clad supernatural beings said to live in the hills and large rocks. They are respected and sometimes feared by locals.
The Nix (Nykurin):
A shapeshifting water spirit, often appearing as a beautiful horse, that lures victims into lakes like Leitisvatn to drown them.
Lost Souls at Sea:
Traditional beliefs suggest that men who die at sea often return to visit their loved ones as spirits shortly after their death.
