Gatlinburg is known for being quite haunted, with popular paranormal hot spots, that include the historic White Oak Flats Cemetery (old settler graves), the Gatlinburg Inn (ghostly founder/guests) and Greenbrier Restaurant (Lydia’s tragic story). Many local businesses and areas, like the Edgewater Hotel, First United Methodist Church, and even parts of the Roaring Fork Motor Trail, are also rumored to have spectral residents. People have encountered apparitions walking up and down the Roaring Fork Motor Trail. One ghost seen on the trail is the “Irish Logger”. The Irish Logger has red hair, a full beard and mustache. He also wears a red plaid shirt that is unbuttoned, blue jeans and is carrying what looks like a log. He will walk up the trail and then simply vanish.

White Oak Flats Cemetery:
Gatlinburg’s oldest cemetery, with stories of original settlers’ spirits. White Oak Flats Cemetery in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is known for paranormal reports including shadowy figures, unexplained whispers, strange apparitions near graves, and a general feeling of restless energy, with some attributing the activity to its long history, unmarked graves, and proximity to the Smoky Mountains, though its survival of the 2016 wildfires is seen by many as miraculous. Visitors and locals have claimed to see ghostly figures wandering the grounds or standing silently over graves. Unexplained whispers in the wind are sometimes heard throughout the cemetery. Some experience unsettling visions while visiting the historic site. The presence of numerous unmarked graves is believed by some to contribute to the cemetery’s restless energy. Established in 1830, the cemetery is nestled in the Smoky Mountains, adding to its mysterious atmosphere.

Gatlinburg Inn:
Reports of a female spirit, possibly the founder, and other ghostly guests. Psychic Danese Niceman says that the female spirit revealed her name. During her lifetime she was known as Sassy Sally, and she was a lady of the night. Sassy Sally was strangled to death by one of the “johns”. The Historic Gatlinburg Inn is known for other paranormal tales, including people hearing disembodied voices and footsteps. People experience unexplained chills, objects moving on their own (like tap water from the faucets turning on), shadowy figures, and reports of a demonic presence or dark energy in Room 11. Guests and staff have also felt the presence of the original founder, R.L. Maples Sr., while some tales mention ghostly teenagers, strange figures by the pool, and even smells of a rotting corpse, adding to its reputation as a haunted landmark in the famously spooky town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Greenbrier Restaurant:
The Greenbrier Restaurant in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, known for its spooky tales, is reportedly haunted by several spirits, most famously Lydia, a heartbroken bride who allegedly hanged herself in the building after being left at the altar, with sightings of a sad, petite woman and unexplained cold spots, while other phenomena include food flying off shelves, spectral figures, and the spirit of a young drowned boy near the bar, making it a popular spot for ghost stories and tours. Lydia the Ghost Bride is also sometimes seen on the stairs. People feel her cold presence. Kitchen staff report food items flying off shelves, and guests sometimes hear Lydia crying and sayiing: “Mark my grave”. The Drowned Boy is a young male spirit often plays near customers’ feet under the bar area. Shadows moving, disembodied voices from empty rooms, and unexplained cold spots are reported. The restaurant, a former lodge, has a long history of unusual occurrences, attracting paranormal investigators.

Edgewater Hotel:
Unexplained paranormal activity in Room 413 is a common occurrence. Guests have seen apparitions in the hallway. In fact, guests call the apparitions “The Hallway Apparitions”. Guests have gotten used to the Hallway Apparitions. The hotel is also known for some unusual paranormal activity that is linked to a tragic 1972 incident where a 7-year-old girl fell from a balcony, with her parents later dying in a car crash; guests report sightings of the girl in the river, pointing to the balcony, and other phenomena like unexplained noises, cold spots, and objects that move on their own accord. Some guests say that they have never experienced anything and are skeptical of the little girl ghost. The little girl case of 1972 is a strange one. They say that the young girl fell from an upper balcony into the Little Pigeon River, with her parents reportedly fleeing the scene before their car crashed, killing them as well. Why would the parents be fleeing? Did the parents have something to do with her death? Guests have heard disembodied footsteps, doors slamming, and unexplained rushing water sounds. The elevator is known to operate erratically, with reports of it getting stuck or making strange noises. Sudden drops in temperature and lights flickering are common reports. Some guests report seeing a man in a dark suit walking the halls.

First United Methodist Church:
Strange silhouettes and priestly apparitions are seen. The First United Methodist Church in Gatlinburg, Tennessee is reportedly known for paranormal activity. People claim to see shadowy figures walking down aisles or shadowy shapes moving in the sanctuary. Unexplained banging noises from the basement and footsteps heard upstairs have been reported by staff. Some say they’ve seen apparitions, including priests, within the historic building. The old building’s ambiance, especially in the Smoky Mountain setting, contributes to unsettling feelings.

UFOS/UAPS:
There have been reports and sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in and around the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area, particularly noted as mysterious lights in the sky, with some incidents involving objects described as circles of lights or fast-moving lights near the Smoky Mountains, leading to local discussion and shared videos, even if official explanations sometimes point to balloons or other aircraft. over Gatlinburg, Tennessee

BIGFOOT SIGHTINGS
There are numerous anecdotal reports, local legends, and even themed attractions centered around Bigfoot (Sasquatch) sightings in and around Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the Great Smoky Mountains. The scientific evidence is lacking, but people still claim to have seen large, hairy figures in the woods and near roads, leading to local folklore, dedicated shops, and even Bigfoot festivals in the region, but sightings are part of regional mythology, not proven fact. When I was driving from Fort Knox, Kentucky to Fort Polk, Louisiana, I parked my car on the side of the road to take a break from driving and to stretch my legs. I recall hearing a strange prolonged howling that I never heard before. I could only wonder if I was hearing the crying sounds of a Bigfoot? Thinking about it in the present time, I either heard the sounds of Bigfoot or the sounds of an injured black bear. As an animal lover, I hope if wasn’t an injured bear that fell victim to a hunter’s rifle. Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) lists multiple Class A (direct) sightings in Sevier County (where Gatlinburg is located).
