Merced, California, is considered by locals to have several haunted locations, particularly in historic buildings and downtown areas. Reported paranormal activity includes sightings of apparitions, phantom smells, and unexplained noises at sites such as the Merced Theatre, the Merced County Courthouse Museum, and near Lake Yosemite. HPI (Halo Paranormal Investigations) has investigated several locations in Merced. We also investigated 4 private homes in Merced. Let’s look at some of the haunted locations in Merced.

Merced County Courthouse Museum:
Known for a ghost named “Everett,” a male figure in 1890s-1910s clothing often seen in the upper hallway. Ron Pirtle a former Merced police officer and now presently a docent has seen the full body apparition of Everett. Ron says: “It was an adult male dressed in turn-of-the-century type of clothes, maybe 1890 to 1910”. He had mutton chops, brushed back hair. He had a light complexion, he was dressed in a dark suit with a white ascot. He wore dark boots.” Things get moved around a lot at this museum. What is annoying is when you set your cell phone in one place and all of a sudden, it’s gone. You look around and find it in a completely different location. Everett can get on a person’s nerves by hiding objects.

Merced Theatre:
The historic Merced Theatre in Merced, California, is rumored to be haunted, featuring prominently in local ghost stories. Reports include legends of a ghost named Johnny that haunts the theater tower. A female ghost is heard yelling “Johnny!” The ghost of Johnny has been reported leaping from the tower.

Greenbriar House (21st Street):
The Greenbriar House (Victorian home) on 21st Street in Merced, California, is considered haunted and is known for local ghost stories. Passersby have reported smelling tobacco smoke, allegedly from a ghost who smoked his pipe in the kitchen. Others have described feeling a presence inside the Victorian home, particularly in the basement.

Lake Yosemite:
Stories of a woman seen in the dark, allegedly calling for her son. Danny Travis was hiking near Lake Yosemite and kept hearing a woman yelling for Timmy. Danny went to where he heard the woman’s voice, only to find there was no one there. Lake Yosemite is at Yosemite National Park. Lake Yosemite is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Merced. Sometime, I will write about the paranormal activity at Yosemite National Park. Yosemite has many stories. Here are a few of those stories. Grouse Lake is particularly infamous, with tales of a ghostly boy who lures hikers to his doom. The Ahwahnee Hotel is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Mary Curry Tressider, who is said to roam the halls. Tenaya Canyon is known as the “Bermuda Triangle” of Yosemite, with numerous strange occurrences reported. Many visitors of Yosemite National Park wind up missing, vanishing from the trails. Some hikers say that there is a lot of negative energy at the areas where serial killer Cary Stayner aka Yosemite Park Killer committed his murders. Additionally, the park is home to various other ghostly legends, including the Nightcrawlers and the curse of Chief Tenaya. The Curse of Chief Tenaya is a legendary curse placed on Tenaya Canyon in Yosemite in the 1850s, after American settlers killed the son of the Ahwahnechee leader. Tenaya cursed the white men, promising they would not live in peace and would suffer in the canyon, leading to its reputation for fatal, mysterious accidents. The most prominent legend is the “Lady of the Lake,” a ghost with long white hair and a white gown. She is said to walk the surface of the lake or the tower’s catwalk, searching for her lost child or lover.

Merced County Fairground Pavilion:
Yes, the Fairground Pavilion in Merced, CA, is rumored to be haunted, according to local ghost stories. The hauntings are reportedly linked to unexplained electrical issues and the ghost of a man who allegedly died during a boxing match at the venue. Don Logan of Fresno, CA saw a bare-chested, bare-knuckled boxer walking around and then vanishing. Don says that one of his ears is a cauliflower ear. Don calls him “Rocky the Ghost”. When Don first saw him, he thought he was a real boxer. When he vanished, Don realized he saw a ghost.

Haunted Mansion (private location):
Woman in old-fashioned clothing is said to haunt a local home. A benevolent spirit that is said to watch over the family. Additionally, the Merced area is rich with history, including dozens of ghost towns in the surrounding county, such as Athlone and Merced Falls. People have seen apparitions at some of these ghost towns. Ghost hunting groups have captured many EVPs. Ghost hunter Suzy Horstman was looking at a mirror and saw the ghost of a woman behind her. The ghost was wearing 19th century clothing.

The Tioga
Apartment building
Merced, CA

Jeremiah Willard (a visitor) encountered a ghoulish being on the 4th floor. Jeremiah felt the being was demonic. Jeremiah claims a couple that lived in this apartment complex played around with a Ouija Board and practiced the dark arts. The Tioga Hotel (now apartments) in Merced, CA, is widely considered one of the most haunted places in the county, often featured in local ghost stories. People say the ghoulish being is malevolent and has scratched people. Then there is the Murdered Manager. Some stories suggest the building is haunted by the spirit of a former manager who was murdered. Reported activity includes strange happenings with the elevator, unexplainable, often scary sounds, and movement in the lower-level taproom. The building is a 1928 Art Deco structure that was converted from a historic hotel into apartments, with residents and locals keeping the ghost stories alive.

Bloss Mansion
Atwater, CA

Located in nearby Atwater, this historic mansion is frequently cited in local paranormal investigations for having active spirits. Billy Springer of San Mateo has seen 2 little red-haired boys playing with a red ball. He also heard that ball hitting against the wall and when he went outside to investigate, there was nothing hitting the wall. Then when he went back into the mansion, he heard the ball hitting the wall again.

Applegate Park
Local childhood stories often mention a haunting near the old rocket ship jungle gym. People have seen a little blonde-haired girl walking in the park and then disappearing. Other people have heard a little girl giggling.
