My dad (Paul Marceau Roberts) and my stepmother Cindy did a Scandinavian vacation and cruise. The trip took them to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Denmark and Lithuania. Yes, I was a bit jealous, but I asked my dad to gather some paranormal stories for me, in which he did. In this article, I highlight the haunted places in Ona, Norway. Come to find out, there are many paranormal enthusiasts and Scandinavian ghost hunters. My dad had a lot to report. So, let’s take a look at the places that my dad discovered for me.

Akershus Fortress (Oslo):
Often cited as Norway’s most haunted location, it is said to be home to a demonic dog named Malcanisen and a robed woman known as Mantelgeisten. Jacob Hansen, a local tourist claims he encountered Malcanisen and this demon dog bared its teeth at Jacob and then leaped towards him. The demon dog went through Jacob’s body and Jacob felt a hot breeze go through him. The encounter frightened Jacob so much, he almost collapsed. Akershus Fortress aka (Akershus Festning) in Oslo is widely considered the most haunted place in Norway. With over 700 years of history involving imprisonment, executions and war. Visitors and staff have reported hearing footsteps, voices, and experiencing physical pushes from invisible forces in its dark corridors. Let’s take a better look at the demon dog named Malcanisen. This entity is known as a terrifying, demonic dog ghost that is said to guard the entrance; legend says that seeing this beast spells death within three months. When Jacob explained to my father about his encounter, it happened 2 years earlier and Jacob is still alive. Another entity is the Robed Woman. This apparition of a woman in a dark robe has been seen walking to and from her chamber, often described as having no face. Akershus Fortress even has a “Ghostly Monk”. The Ghostly Monk is a spectral, hooded figure that has been spotted by many visitors of the Fortress. It is thought to be a clergyman who died during the Reformation. The Fortress even has cryptids. People have seen Nightpyres before a fire. Nightpyres are described as small, burning women the size of infants, often seen before a fire breaks out at the fortress. Some theorize that these Nightpyres are a strange variety of fairie. The Fortress was built in 1299 to protect Oslo, the fortress served as a notorious prison and was occupied by Nazis during World War II, who executed people on the grounds. Today, it is a popular, yet spooky, tourist attraction. Many ghost hunting groups visit this Fortress, including ghosthunter Oliver Johansen who claims he has seen 4 full body apparitions at the Fortress and in his own words….”I captured a —–load of EVPs”.

Bærums Verk (Bærum):
This former ironworks village is famous for the “Lady in Green” at the Værtshuset restaurant and reports of a phone that rings every night at the same time with no one on the other end. Bærums Verk in Bærum is widely considered one of Norway’s most haunted locations. Centered around a 17th-century ironworks, the area—particularly the historic Værtshuset restaurant (built 1640)—is famous for reports of paranormal activity, including sightings of the 18th-century owner, Anna Krefting. At the village you have the haunted Værtshuset Restaurant. Considered Norway’s oldest restaurant, staff and guests have reported seeing the ghost of Anna Krefting, often described as a woman in green, on the second floor. Then in the Administration Building, there are reports about the phone rings every night at the same time, with technicians unable to explain the cause; answering it results in only a strange, static hissing sound. The Ironworks Area has many spirits. They are believed to be former, dedicated workers from the old ironworks, which was founded in 1640. The site is now a popular shopping and culinary destination but embraces its haunted history as part of its charm. Special Note: Sigurd Nilsen and Gunnar Jensen claim that late at night you can hear banging. Sigurd and Gunnar say that the ghosts of these ironworkers are still banging against metals. Sigurd calls them “Bangers”. The Bangers sort of reminds me of when I visited Washington, California, people hear ghostly miners banging on the rocks late at night and they called them “Tommy Knockers”. Bangers seem to be a type of Tommy Knocker.

Dalen Hotel (Telemark):
The historic Dalen Hotel (built 1894) in Telemark, Norway, is famously considered haunted, often referred to as one of Norway’s most haunted hotels. It is renowned for the ghost of “The English Lady” (Miss Greenfield), who allegedly haunts Room 17 following a 19th-century tragedy involving a hidden infant and her subsequent suicide. The English Lady (Room 17) is a popular ghost. Guests and staff report hearing a baby crying in the corridors and feeling icy chills in Room 17, which is often booked by those seeking a paranormal experience. Most of the clients are not disappointed. Linnea Hagen says she booked Room 17 and one of her books flew across a chair and landed in her bed. Then Linnea heard a woman laughing. Linnea believes it was the English Lady. The hotel staff take The English Lady seriously and even have a table that is set and ready for The English Lady in their hotel restaurant. Other reported spirits include a “Ghost Bride” who allegedly fell down the stairs and “Sam the Bellman,” an old staff member who reportedly still helps with luggage. Despite the legends, the hotel is a luxurious, functioning hotel that embraces its supernatural history as part of its “fairytale hotel” charm. My dad and stepmother stayed in this hotel and only witnessed hearing knockings on their hotel room walls.

Nidaros Cathedral (Trondheim):
Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim is considered as a hotspot for paranormal activity, famously associated with the apparition of a “Bloody Monk”. First sighted in 1924, this ghost is often described as a tall figure with a bleeding gash across its throat, appearing in the choir area, sometimes accompanied by strange, unexplained chanting. The spirit is described as a tall man in a dark monk’s habit with dark, glowing eyes. The most famous report came from Bishop Marie Gleditsch, who claimed to see the monk with blood dripping from his throat, who then walked through a choir member and vanished. This sighting occurred in 1924. The haunting is debated by historians who note that no, or very few, monastic orders were ever officially associated with the cathedral throughout its history. Beyond the visual sighting, there are reports of inexplicable, haunting organ music and chanting, particularly in the late hours. Nidaros Cathedral is a significant, 1,000-year-old historic site built over the tomb of St. Olaf, adding to its mysterious and sacred atmosphere.

Nes Church Ruins (Vormsund):
Known for legends of a “Pushy Priest” and strange electronic malfunctions experienced by visitors. The Nes Church Ruins (Nes Kirkeruiner) in Vormsund, Norway, are widely considered haunted and are frequently cited as a very haunted place in Norway. Visitors and ghost hunters report paranormal activity, including sightings of a ghostly priest, electronic malfunctions, and feelings of heavy, invisible pressure. Sigrid Olsen and her girlfriend Freya Karlsen both say that when they conducted their paranormal investigation, they both were pushed and Freya actually fell down and scraped her knee. Who is the Ghostly Priest? Many reports center on the spirit of Jacob Christian Finckenhagen, a priest who served from 1800 to 1837. Folklore suggests he was a troubled man who took his own life, and his figure is often seen in black robes walking near his grave or within the ruins. Visitors frequently report that phones suddenly lose power, camera screens go black, and lights flash without cause while on the grounds. Reports include a heavy, suffocating sensation, often described as moving through water. Stories also exist regarding the tragic death of a newlywed couple who drowned in the river nearby, and sightings of children near the walls. The ruins are popular for ghost tours.
