From 1973 to 1976, I went on my first tour with the Army. I was stationed at Merrill Barracks in Nuremberg, Germany.

Merrill Barracks was originally built between 1936 and 1939 as a massive SS signals school and barracks. The U.S. 45th Infantry Division captured the site in April 1945. The Army later named it after Private Joseph F. Merrell, a Medal of Honor recipient. The facility closed in 1992 and now houses German civilian offices.

Merrill Barracks was very haunted.

In 1974, I would wander the dark hallways to see if I could encounter any ghosts. Soldiers stationed at Merrill Barracks complained that their personal belongings would go missing or appear to have been purposely moved. Soldiers sometimes reported hearing disembodied footsteps marching down the hallways late at night. Whispers in German could occasionally be heard in certain rooms.

On one particular night, while making my ghostly rounds, I witnessed two darting shadows cross my path.

After this happened, I went to my first sergeant and volunteered to become a Dayroom Orderly, which gave me greater access to the barracks at various hours of the night. I was allowed to do this for a short period of time, and during my impromptu ghost hunting, I located an area of the barracks that had extreme cold spots.

As a 95 Bravo, or Military Policeman, I had the opportunity to work undercover. I was assigned to CID (Criminal Investigation Division) and the DST (Drug Suppression Team). I traveled throughout Germany, Austria, and Italy while working undercover as “Porkchops.”

My job was to identify drug runners and drug dealers throughout Germany. The job took me as far as Italy, where drugs were being transported from Bologna, Italy, to Munich, Germany.

One of the things I learned while in the military is that military bases can have a reputation for being haunted. The reasons often involve suicides, training accidents, murders, and other tragedies.

During my time with CID, I visited many reportedly haunted locations, from castles to military installations. CID sent me to Hohenfels Army Base in Germany. Soldiers told me that one of their own had hung himself and that, every once in a while, soldiers entering that room would see the spirit of the soldier. Some claimed to see him hanging from the ceiling.

When I entered the room, I found it to be extremely cold at times. On another occasion, I witnessed strange knocking on the wall.

During my days with CID, I had many ghostly encounters. Germany is rich in history, and I believe that its historic locations contain plenty of residual and intelligent energy.

From 1979 to 1986, I re-enlisted in the Army and became a 97 Bravo, Intelligence Analyst. I attended Military Intelligence training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

I was later stationed in Seoul, Korea, with the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion at PIC-K, the Photo Interpretation Center: Korea.

I had a Top-Secret clearance with an SBI (Special Background Investigation). I worked with image interpreters who analyzed hot rolls containing aerial reconnaissance and satellite imagery of North Korea and Red China.

The reason I chose M.I., or Military Intelligence, was because I believed that Military Intelligence knew some of the answers to the UFO question.

The question was simple:

“Are we alone?”

During my days with CID, I remember seeing Military Intelligence personnel in suits going here and there, carrying briefcases. That image never left my mind. I always wanted to know exactly what Military Intelligence did.

Finally, in 1979, I watched a James Bond movie. It made me think about the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence. Before I knew it, I was talking to an Army recruiter and signing on the dotted line.

I was going to Military Intelligence School at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

I became a 97 Bravo, Intelligence Analyst, and eventually found myself stationed at PIC-K, the Photo Interpretation Center in Korea. My job involved working with image interpreters who analyzed hot rolls from reconnaissance aircraft and satellites. On these hot rolls were photographs of North Korea and Red China.

A lot of the time, we wore suits or Class A uniforms with no insignia identifying us as Military Intelligence. We drove black sedans with tinted windows and no identifying plates. We had a sign on the dashboard stating that the vehicle was not to be stopped for any reason.

People who didn’t know who we were may have thought we were the Men in Black.

The Korean police were notified of our midnight hot runs. We would make runs from Seoul to Osan Air Force Base to pick up hot rolls. I would have one half of the combination, while my partner had the other half. Together, we could open the trunk of the car and then unlock the suitcase inside, where the hot rolls were secured.

My clearance was Top Secret with an SBI, or Special Background Investigation.

My code name was Hollywood.

I dressed the part: black suit, tie, white shirt, sunglasses, and short-cropped hair.

It was far removed from my days as a narc, when I wore a trench coat, beard, long hair, and sunglasses. During my days as a narc with CID, my code name was Porkchops.

So there I was. I had transformed from Porkchops into a new persona: Hollywood, a “spook” working with other intelligence and military personnel from Marine Recon, Delta Force, Special Forces, Air Force Special Operations, Naval Intelligence, and Air Force Intelligence in a combined effort to thwart the enemy and protect our sacred soil, known as the USA!

During my days at PIC-K, I came across six shocking aerial photographs taken from satellites.

They were six photographs of UFOs.

They were classified as UFOs because they were considered to be intelligently controlled based on their movements and behavior.

At that point, I believed it was misleading when the Air Force stated that it was no longer investigating UFOs. Here I was, holding and categorizing six UFO photographs.

The photographs were sent to the DIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and then to the CIA, the Central Intelligence Agency. From there, they disappeared into a black void.

There was one more photograph that I found particularly disturbing.

It wasn’t a picture of a UFO. It was a photograph taken in Vietnam in 1981. It was classified as a possible American POW.

Later, there were reports from U.S. Army Special Forces that American POWs were still being imprisoned in Vietnam. When I saw this photograph, I was irritated that our government wasn’t doing anything about these forgotten POWs.

Maybe I talked too much, because before I knew it, I was shipped off to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where I received an H Identifier. This meant that I became an Army instructor.

I taught the Soviet threat to elite troops, including the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles; the 82nd Airborne Division; U.S. Army Rangers; Marine Recon; Delta Force; and Navy SEALs.

I taught them about Soviet weapons such as the AK-47, AKMS, a modified version of the AK-47, the SVD sniper rifle, the RPG-7, and other Soviet weaponry.

I also taught the W.E.F.T. system—Wings, Engine, Fuselage, and Tail Section—used in identifying Soviet aircraft. I instructed students on the kill zones of Soviet aircraft, tanks, and amphibious assault vehicles. What was unique about my training is that I wore a Soviet uniform, black gloves, green ski-mask, sunglasses and pretended to be a Soviet defector named Corporal Dowbowski. I would also teach Soviet Calisthenics.

Looking back at my days in the military, those experiences helped hone my skills as a paranormal investigator.

From ghosts to UFOs, my military experiences became part of the foundation for the work I would later do in the paranormal field.
