NYC Just Evicted 40,000 Migrant Families
In this 3 September 2024 video, New York City resident Cash Jordan focuses on the report NYC Just decided to evict every family living in its shelter system. The shelters are at capacity, and the city claims evictions must happen to make room for new arrivals, who will also be evicted after their shelter stay expires.
The right-to-shelter rule in New York City has been in place for over 40 years. It originated from a 1981 consent decree which required the city to provide temporary housing to anyone who requested it. The decree was a result of a lawsuit filed by six homeless people who claimed the city and state had a legal obligation to provide shelter to certain homeless people.
In 2024, the influx of migrants since New York City became a sancuary city has over-burdened the available housing options and the city is struggling to meet migrant requirements.
While NYC has tried but failed to overturn the existing right to shelter rules, the placement of stay time limits has been allowed. This sets a 30-day stay limit for a certain group of migrants and a 60-day stay limit for women and children. Once they hit the stay limit, they will need to reapply with NYC for a shelter location or find their own place for shelter.
