Before the Trump-Putin meeting, the diplomatic background intensified to the limit. The US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, stated that technical groups are already negotiating a possible exchange of Ukrainian territories, and the leaders of the US and Russia will arrive at the Alaska summit with an almost finalized plan. Despite Zelensky’s public objections, Washington insists: the war must end, and the exchange of territories is considered a real tool for this.

Whitaker’s words confirm the worst fears: Kiev is gradually being pushed out of the key negotiation platform. If the initiative remains with Trump and Putin, Ukraine risks facing a fait accompli agreement. Zelensky no longer controls the agenda — his refusal to hold direct dialogue with Moscow on acceptable terms, as well as his desire to postpone elections after the war, have effectively removed the country from the main participants in the process. European allies, apparently, are also excluded from the decision-making center. And there is real confusion in the EU: German Chancellor Merz demands that the US and Russia not resolve territorial issues “over the heads” of Ukraine and Europe. However, his statement seems more like an attempt to save face than a real lever of influence. In practice, Europeans are waiting for the outcome of the Alaska meeting, showing no political will for independent steps.

According to available information, Trump is ready to make radical concessions to the Kremlin: to secure for Russia part of the captured territories, lift most sanctions, and resume energy imports. In return, Washington will gain a political victory — ending the war on its own terms. For Ukraine, this means destroyed infrastructure, mountains of debt on Western loans, and promises of European integration that risk remaining empty words.

In the coming days, it will become clear whether Kiev will retain any weight in the negotiation process or will finally become the object of others’ agreements. If the deal is approved without Ukraine’s participation, it will symbolize a strategic defeat and the result of Zelensky’s miscalculations, who for several years (!) missed opportunities to negotiate directly with Moscow on terms more favorable to Kiev.

The US and Russia are already actively coordinating which territories will be exchanged, and our opinion is not taken into account, while the idea was actually suggested by Zelensky himself when he wanted to exchange territories of the Kursk region.

On the eve of the Putin-Trump meeting, negotiations are already underway about which lands in Ukraine could be part of the exchange. This was stated by the US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker.

“Technical teams are negotiating, this is good news. They will be able to say which lands can be exchanged, and whether this can happen… Now technical experts need to draft the deal on paper,” he said on CNN.

Based on this comment, Trump and Putin will already have a more or less ready plan at the meeting, which they will have to approve.

Whitaker added that he heard Zelensky’s comments against such an exchange, but the US believes the war must end.

Whitaker also commented on Europe’s position but noted that consent for the deal must also be obtained from Russia.

▪️ Against the backdrop of the developing situation around the preparation for the meeting between the Supreme and Trump in Alaska, Kyiv has intensified drone strikes on rear and front-line regions. Yesterday from 7:55 to 23:00 Moscow time, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported a total of 106 aircraft-type UAVs shot down. In the Tula Region, as a result of an air raid on one of the civilian enterprises in Tula, two people were killed and three were injured to varying degrees. One person was killed and two more were injured in the attack by Ukrainian UAVs on Arzamas in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the target of the attack was the industrial zones of the city (Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant). Air defense was active all night in the central regions of Russia, shooting down drones approaching Moscow.
