Reporting backed by anonymous sources and published by The Washington Post and Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin alleged severe shortages of long-range missiles and interceptors; then WaPo followed up with a story claiming Trump felt “misled” by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at Camp David after believing the munitions problem “had been fixed.” Other outlets, including CNN, amplified the broader shortage narrative, implying the United States is fighting with one hand tied behind its back.Soon after the story was published, President Trump responded by saying the U.S. has “massive amounts of ‘munitions,’” that production is expanding with record new plants and factories, and that “the ‘leakers’ of these treasonous statements are being hunted down.” He later told reporters the United States has a “virtual unlimited supply” of missiles while noting some types are “tighter,” and publicly reaffirmed that he is “extremely happy” with the job Hegseth is doing. White House and Department of War officials labeled the narrative of the tension “fake news” and “fictional.”
