Fenghuangopterus enters the LPT 2x

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Three pterosaur specimens
have been assigned to the genus Fenghuangopterus (Figs 1–4). Only two enter the large pterosaur tree (LPT, 272 taxa) as basal dorygnathids, not scaphognathids, as originally proposed. The third specimen (Fig 4) needs more time.

Middle Jurassic dorygnathids
are now known in Europe and China. Sericipterus is another East Asian dorygnathid, as is Kryptodrakon (known from scraps), also originally misidentified.

The soft tissue preservation is instructive,
supporting the narrow chord wing membrane Bauplan first proposed by Zittel 1882 and supported by Peters 2002. That was disputed by Elgin, Hone and Frey 2011 who mistakenly invoked the concept of ‘shrinkage’ while distorting what Zittel and Peters reconstructed. See reptileevolution.com/pterosaur-wings for more information.
