The Carnivora subset
of the LRT (Fig 1) is constantly churning, turning and burning as I learn more about this difficult clade. Here’s the latest insight.

Honey badgers can swim,
but they are not good swimmers. Otter civets and otters are better swimmers. And yet the skull of the honey badger, Mellivora, is remarkably similar to that of the harbor seal, Phoca (Fig 2).

Cynogale, the aquatic otter civet
(Fig 3) with nostril and ear flap doors appears closer to sea lions, but the many aquatic traits shared by seals and sea lions is swamping that connection.
