Achaenodon finally joins Conoryctella in the LRT
According to Wikipedia – Achaenodon:
“Achaenodon is an extinct artiodactyl mammal, possibly belonging to the family Helohyidae. It lived in the mid-late Eocene (about 43-39 million years ago) and its fossil remains have been found in North America.”
Here
in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2325 taxa) this pig-sized, hippo-like herbivore has bounced back and forth between hyaenodons, hippos and mesonychids.
Currently, Archaenodon is not an artiodactyl. And it’s not even a placental.
The problem turned out to be the vast size difference
between Achaenodon and its newest closest relative: Conoryctella, a taxon represented here by a single view freehand drawing (which is less than optimal).

Achaenodon nests here as another large marsupial herbivore,
joining Astrapotherium, Pantolambda, Phenacodus, Uintatherium, Titanoides and their relatives. These are all traditioinal placentals in prior studies.
Scoring corrections for Achaenodon
had a wider wave of influence in the LRT, resolving several problems far from the Conoryctella node. It also shook up other nodes close to the origin of marsupials (for reasons unknown). That’s a testament to the fragility of the mammal subset of the LRT, now going through its 209th day of repairs.
No wonder no one on the planet has succeeded in creating a trait-based cladogram of the Mammalia, preferring to go the genomic route instead.
