Chins: uniquely human
A PBS video on human chins
appeared recently on YouTube.
Various hypotheses for the acquisition
and universal retention of this uniquely human trait were presented. The real reason is, as always: natural selection. Chins make the face more attractive to onlookers including potential mates. Evidently ‘chinless’ people mated less often and so had fewer children.
That’s why plastic surgeons enhance small = receding chins with implants.
On the other hand, some people think their chin is too large, so they opt for chin reduction surgery. Example shown here.
Figure 1. Margot Robbie with and without a chin.

According to ScottsdalePlasticSurgeon.com
“The chin plays a vital role in defining the proportions of the face. Having a receding or weak chin can create an imbalance of facial features. This can make the nose look bigger or the neck less defined in some cases.“

Various authors
have suggested the chin plays a role in mastication = chewing. Others dispute this suggestion.
The fact
that some chins are considered (= opinion) too large, while others are considered too small argues for the perceived importance of the human chin as a sign of beauty, health and attraction for mating and ultimately creating a family. Not the actual importance in physiology.
As reported by PBS, the chin is uniquely human. It separates us from all other hominids, all other primates and all other tetrapods – except elephants (Fig 2) in which the apparent ‘chin’ is actually a leftover base for incisor insertion in more primitive chinless elephants.
I first learned the phylogenetic importance
of the uniquely human chin while writing and illustrating the 1991 book, From the Beginning. It raised a uniquely human eyebrow (derived from gibbons).

That’s one I didn’t realize but I realized the other. Man is the only one to walk upright. He is the only one with (assume naked) with his genitals exposed as he walks. He is the only one that cooks his food. He is the only one that builds temples to his god.
Many more…..
