Abstract

High-resolution Mastcam-Z imagery of the Cheyava Falls workspace reveals circular, cell-like modules 152–318 µm across. These features, first described as “wood-cell analogues,” are now quantitatively shown to fall outside the natural fossil wood-cell range—no authentic wood cells measure under 100 µm, yet these Martian modules occur as small as 152 µm, with uniform geometry, smooth edges, and contextual repetition incompatible with organic variability. Their morphological precision and discrete scaling instead suggest deliberate fabrication or micro-composite structuring. This analysis revises the biogenic interpretation and supports the hypothesis that these “cells” are man-made micro-units embedded in a composite material on Mars.

1. Introduction

The so-called “Leopard Spots” textures at Cheyava Falls have attracted interest for their repeating circular motifs that resemble cross-sections of wood tissue. Earlier studies interpreted these forms as fossilized xylem or tracheid cells. However, subsequent high-resolution image analyses and calibrated measurements show a tight size range of 0.15–0.32 mm—remarkably uniform, yet too small and geometrically consistent for any biological wood analogue. This work presents corrected metrology and re-evaluates the origin of these modules under a materials-engineering framework.

Above figure is described in details at

The analyzed figure derives from the Perseverance rover’s WATSON images at Cheyava Falls workspace. All measurements were obtained from the version archived at https://www.flickr.com/photos/fossil_lin/54900781304/in/dateposted-public/, containing three panels (a–c), each with a 5 mm scale bar. Pixel counts were calibrated directly against the bar to derive true micrometric scales.

Observed size range: 152–318 µm (mean ≈ 236 µm).

All circular modules exhibit sharp, well-defined boundaries with minimal distortion, uniform spacing and non-random distribution, and lack of cracks, compression, or secondary mineral infill typically found in fossil wood sections.

4. Discussion

Natural fossilized wood cells, even in highly silicified or metamorphosed samples, seldom measure below 100 µm and typically range 200–600 µm depending on species and preservation. In contrast, the Cheyava Falls modules display extreme dimensional regularity within a narrow interval (150–320 µm), suggesting artificial size control. The absence of inter-cellular variability, developmental gradients, or growth rings further contradicts a biological origin.

Instead, the uniform circular geometry and precise packing are consistent with engineered modular composites—materials assembled from repeated micro-cells for mechanical or thermal purposes. Such patterning parallels micro-lattice designs observed in modern terrestrial composites and advanced 3D-printed materials, albeit here mineralized and preserved.

5. Conclusion

Quantitative analysis of Mastcam-Z imagery from Cheyava Falls demonstrates that the so-called “wood cells” measure 152–318 µm, contradicting expectations for natural fossil wood and exhibiting hallmarks of precision manufacturing. These findings support the interpretation that the Martian “Leopard Spots” textures represent man-made micro-composite structures rather than biogenic fossils.
