Killowen DCNN9220 – The explanation for its excessive rise in mean minima – why can’t the Met Office see this?

In my review of Katesbridge, I noted how spectacular the increment was in mean minimums from the nearby Killowen weather station. Whilst “frost hollow” Katesbridge and coastal Helens Bay only managed 60 year increments of 0.33°C in mean minimums, Killowen achieved a highly improbable over 5 fold higher increment of 1.79°C. This improbability warranted further investigation – the findings were a sad indictment of the operational standards of the Met Office. Quite why the Met Office cannot, or possibly will not, see  their own shortcomings is very illuminating.

The Killowen weather station was installed for temperature readings in 1997 in conjunction with a general expansion of the Carlingford Lough Yacht club which had been moved to this site in the early 1960s. Originally this fledgling club was a small collection of wooden buildings around a jetty which, over time, expanded to the modern and well equipped facility of today. Permanent buildings, changing rooms, bars extensive parking and hard-standing followed. The nature of the site changed from a natural lough-side scene to an urbanised area.

So now considering the weather station installation date of 1997, an obvious question arises – how were these figures for 1961 to 1990 compiled?

As I detailed in my Katesbridge report Messrs Daniel Hollis and Matthew Perry simply fabricated Killowen figures from other allegedly “Well Correlated” sites. But how can anywhere be “well correlated” with the unique Killowen urbanised facility that did not exist during the above period?

To check my own objectivity in this matter I put the details to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to double check. This was the response.

The Met Office (and global standards like WMO) frequently use 1961–1990 as a reference “normal” period for anomalies, trends, and maps. This baseline is derived from:

• Gridded datasets (e.g., HadUK-Grid or UKCP09 predecessors), which interpolate and blend observations from many stations across the UK/Northern Ireland.
• Homogenized regional/national series for Northern Ireland, which draw on a network of long-running stations (some with data from the early 20th century or before).
• Nearby or representative stations for infilling/spatial averaging where direct observations are sparse.

For a short-record site like Killowen, any “1961–1990 average” or anomaly referenced against that period cannot come from on-site measurements—it must be estimated or modelled from surrounding/gridded data. This is standard practice: newer stations inherit a climatological “normal” from the regional grid or composites to allow anomaly calculations and comparisons.“

THUS………the Met Office has used fabricated numbers developed for a natural lough-side location for the start comparison period and then seamlessly bonded real numbers from the subsequent highly urbanised site surrounded by both windbreaks, car parks and vehicles, buildings and all the paraphernalia of a modern leisure complex.

Now consider what this weather station looks like at “lough level”. The 10 metre wind mast is discernible in the headline image from its long slim cast shadow with the Stevenson Screen a few metres to the south of it. In this image below the wind mast is clearly visible as a marker………but making out the Screen………….? This really is Class 5 junk.

So now that  1.79°C increase in mean minimum makes perfect sense – IT IS PHONEY. The Met Office are demonstrably risible and unfit for the purpose of climate science clearly judged by their own evidenced operating standards. It is so obvious there is no defence – I challenge them to prove me wrong.
