Although I had some misgivings about the painfully slow reveal in Martin Edwards’ Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife, I enjoyed it, and was intrigued enough to encourage a dip into another of his novels, and I’m glad I did. Gallows Court is a real page turner with none of the slowness of the other book.
The central character, Jacob, is a youngish reporter who gets tangled up in a complex series of crimes. Often these seem connected to a mysterious figure, Rachel Savernake, who appears to be either a criminal mastermind or a crime-fighting vigilante – one of the clever things about the way the book is written is that it really isn’t clear whether or not she should regarded as on the side of the angels all the way through.
As the plot, set in 1930s London, gets more and more intense, we also get increasing revelations from a 1919 journal, written on an obscure island by a teenager who doesn’t appear in the main storyline, and who hates the teenage Rachel. Initially these journal entries are irritating, distracting from the development of the story, but eventually they reveal crucial background.
The only issue I had with the book is that it verges on the misogynistic – very few of the female characters are positively portrayed. But, with two extremely dramatic twists it’s certainly a very effective mystery story and one of the better murder mysteries I’ve read of late.
