Amid press reports about bitcoin mining the firm involved then said there was a lot more to it than that. However to avoid the fracking ‘ban’ they will have to stay below the UK threshold allowed for earth tremors during such operations. A licence has been issued for tests.

Reabold responds after weekend report
Reabold issued its statement on Monday after the [Telegraph] newspaper report drew attention to the company’s plans for West Newton. The report said the gas field near Hull could be used to power a data centre for bitcoin mining. It also said the site could hold enough gas to meet more than 10% of the UK’s energy needs.

West Newton remains central to wider energy debate
West Newton has already drawn attention because of its scale and location. The site has been estimated to hold up to eight billion cubic metres of gas. Reabold has also received an Environment Agency licence for limited, low-pressure fracking there.
