Sepulchre Street - Martin Edwards ****

By Brian Clegg

In the fourth of his inter-war Rachel Savernake mysteries, Martin Edwards doesn’t disappoint – he continues the series well, though the book doesn’t have quite the same drive as some of the earlier novels. We’re back with the mysterious, rich Rachel, her ‘staff’ – more family, really, and sidekick stroke crime reporter Jacob Flint.

The tag line is ‘How can you solve a murder before it’s happened’ – the TL;DR answer here is you can’t as, before she dies, surrealist artist Damaris Gethin ask Rachel to solve her murder – but at the point it happens, Rachel has no clue. However, in a suitably twisty tale where there are plenty of people not just suspects but definitely intending to end someone’s life, it sort of comes true.

There are one or two weaknesses, notably the way that everyone seems to think it is easy to identify someone just because they were wearing a particular hat and coat (and limped a bit). And the opening aspect of being asked to solve the murder of someone who isn’t dead was distinctly reminiscent of the first of Anthony Horowitz’s Hawthorne books. But as usual Edwards combines a good period feel (it’s just that the plot is set in the 30s, the writing fits well with the period too) with some action and menace and a couple of suitable twists.

Overall, a worthy contribution to the series (I don’t mean ‘worthy’ in the derogatory sense), though I wish Edwards would make more of the big secret uncovered in the first book that seems to have been pretty much ignored ever since.
