AI Won't Replace Skilled Trades. It May Finally Standardize Them

Artificial intelligence has become one of the biggest talking points across nearly every industry. Much of the conversation has focused on automation and whether technology will eventually replace human workers. In the skilled trades, however, a different story is beginning to emerge. Rather than replacing experienced professionals, AI is becoming a tool that helps them work more efficiently, make better informed decisions, and deliver more consistent results.

This shift is particularly important in industries where every job is different and every property presents its own set of challenges. A chimney inspection, for example, is rarely as straightforward as many homeowners assume. Between aging homes, decades of appliance models, evolving building codes, and changing construction materials, technicians are expected to evaluate highly specialized systems that often require extensive research before any diagnosis can be made.

Joe Ochal, Founder of Chimney Scientists, believes AI is beginning to solve one of the industry’s biggest operational challenges by making technical information far more accessible.

“AI is really just a resource for information and a time saver when it comes to the trades. Not a replacement for human expertise.”

That distinction is an important one. While concerns about AI replacing jobs continue to dominate headlines, many businesses are instead using the technology to strengthen the expertise of the people already doing the work.

For skilled trades, one of the biggest obstacles is complexity rather than capability.

“When you’re performing a diagnostic inspection of a gas or wood burning appliance, there are literally thousands of models. No one can know them all, just make educated guesses,” Ochal explains.

For decades, technicians have relied on experience, manufacturer manuals, and lengthy technical support calls to diagnose unfamiliar equipment. While those resources remain valuable, they can also consume significant time during an inspection.

Today, companies are beginning to integrate AI into that process in practical ways. Rather than searching through archives or waiting on hold with manufacturers, technicians can use AI powered software to identify appliances from photographs, retrieve owner manuals, and quickly locate the correct diagnostic procedures.

According to Ochal, the process has dramatically improved efficiency without changing who is responsible for the final diagnosis.

“We use AI software to take a photo of the appliance, any defining features or the rating plate. The technician is trained to ask the software a series of questions regarding what is wrong with the appliance and what is the goal of the inspection today,” he says. “The AI will often immediately identify the appliance, have the owner’s manual, and then provide the step by step process for diagnostics of the appliance to isolate variables and diagnose any issue.”

He compares the technology to having immediate technical support available in the field.

“Think of it like an in person Tech Support line for every manufacturer of every appliance.”

Instead of replacing expertise, AI allows experienced technicians to spend less time searching for information and more time evaluating conditions, communicating with homeowners, and solving problems.

The implications extend beyond speed alone. Better access to technical information also creates greater consistency, something that has become increasingly important as skilled trades face workforce shortages and growing demand.

Ochal believes many service industries still struggle with inconsistent training practices that leave too much room for guesswork.

“I don’t think homeowners understand that there is very little training for the majority of the trade businesses. Most small business owners consider taking a new employee on a couple of rides to see how things are done in a training program.”

At Chimney Scientists, that philosophy has led to a significantly different approach.

“We have five hours of weekly training for our inspectors. It’s ongoing, it’s intense, and it’s necessary to make sure that we have the most qualified technicians in the field.”

AI has become another layer within that training model by giving technicians faster access to manufacturer information and standardized diagnostic procedures. Combined with continuous education, the technology helps reduce uncertainty while improving documentation and decision making.

“Since we train our technicians on using AI and we also record what they are doing in the field through our software, this ensures that our technicians are going out with the most intelligence and resources to solve customer issues.”

For homeowners, these operational improvements may not always be visible, but they can have a meaningful impact. More accurate diagnostics, better documentation, and faster access to technical information increase the likelihood that problems are identified correctly the first time, reducing unnecessary callbacks and helping customers make more informed decisions about repairs and maintenance.

Looking ahead, Ochal believes AI’s greatest contribution may be raising the overall standard across the skilled trades. “I see homeowners getting a higher quality of service that is more efficient in solving the problem the first time.”

He also believes the technology has the potential to reduce one of the industry’s oldest challenges: relying on assumptions instead of verified information.

“AI, if properly utilized, should get rid of this.”

As artificial intelligence continues to find its place across construction and home services, its greatest value may not come from replacing experienced professionals. Instead, it may come from giving them faster access to the knowledge they need to perform their work with greater consistency, accuracy, and confidence. In industries built on trust and technical expertise, that evolution could prove to be one of AI’s most practical applications.
