The World’s Oldest Surviving Map of the Holy Land
Surprisingly, the actual masterpiece doesn’t exist in Germany at all. The original archaeological evidence documenting the Holy Land before the onset of the Islamic conquests in the early 7th century is located in St. George’s Church in Madaba, Jordan. The map was originally painstakingly assembled from stone tesserae during the sixth century, during the reign of Emperor Justinian. He was the most influential Roman Emperor for the construction of the Hagia Sophia and the Codification of Roman law, which was completed during his lifetime. Known today as the Madaba Map, it’s widely regarded as the earliest surviving cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, and at its heart, Jerusalem itself.
