Met Office Quality Control – Recording Outlandish “Data”

The above X posting from the Met Office demonstrates the obsession they seem to have with recording “extremes” without any regards to quality control regarding their actual accuracy. This is a very common problem with their “public facing” representation of alleged “Data” – it is just plainly and simply……..wrong.

The first thing that should strike anyone with just a modicum of understanding of UK weather should be the somewhat improbable situation that, whilst RAF Northolt should reach 28.6 °C (83.5 °F), the north coast of Northern Ireland at the pure junk Giants Causeway site should struggle to get above freezing point at just 1.4 °C (34.5 °F) in early September – a difference of 27.2 °C (49 °F). A member of the general public may be excused for missing that or just taking it that the “authorities” knew best but surely the Met Office themselves should have questioned it for just one minute before declaring the almost impossible.

What makes me so sure that it was a wrong reading? Well firstly the excellent Weatherobs.com publishes frequent readings throughout the day for most official automatic reporting Met Office sites. This was their recorded reading for the seven day period at the time.

Did nobody at the Met Office notice from their own data that the recorded temperature allegedly dropped from the region of 18°C to 1.4 °C in the space of just one hour in the middle of the day? A close to all time record minimum ever for the day of the year and a record hourly change and that at midday!

I posted in plain disgust on X in response to this “Tweet” from the Met Office as follows hoping that it might provoke a correction or a response of some sort. None came.

“So much for “Quality Control” you idiots. No it did NOT drop to 1.4°C at Giants Causeway – your equipment has screwed up. From 17.64 to 1.4 in one hour did not happen. And the subsequent maximum is wrong there as well.”

The evidence for my complaint was simple, no other Northern Ireland site recorded below 10°C that entire day (including the nighttime) let alone around midday. This reading was clearly caused by a malfunction of some sort. However, it did not stop at this bogus daily national minimum proclamation. On their separate “daily extremes” website the Met office proclaimed a daily regional high from Giants Causeway that was very close to an all time high for the same day of the year.

No other Northern Ireland weather station got within 5°C of Giants Causeway’s high that day – really an astonishing range from 1.4°C to 27.1°C when everywhere else never even managed a range in double figures .

Going further a reader picked up on my note on X and contacted me suggesting they would be willing to get this verified. They agreed (under anonymity) to contact the Met Office for an explanation and have now forwarded me the reply.

We had a small known technical blip with Giant’s Causeway which has caused some erroneous data. We have handed it over to our engineers and relevant support teams to investigate.

Okay, a “small known technical blip” occurred but at no point did anyone at the Met Office stop to think that the readings were massively out of all probable reality and decided to proclaim them to the general public AND despite being notified have NOT in any way amended their website details.

Known false data is on file and will almost certainly not be removed even after I forward this report to them. The evidence in front of the general public is one of “Fake News” and they will not change it. In fact, as I went to great lengths to explain in my 500th post covering Met Office data recording, they will be perfectly at ease with known false data being on file. I confidently expect these absurd Giants Causeway readings (on a par with the absurdity of the site location itself surrounded by gorse) to be archived. I will check when these become available in almost a year’s time so be very aware Met Office that with these, and numerous other errors, you are being monitored and will be held to account.

Of course, all these “Extreme” numbers suit the Met Office shock horror narrative and none of the employees there (who know perfectly well this is all fake news) will speak out – their livelihoods and pensions all depend on keeping this charade going.
