Chicago Bears request interview for 2X fired head coach in high demand

The Chicago Bears are seemingly leaving no stone unturned in their coaching search and could turn to a familiar face to quarterback Caleb Williams.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Bears have requested an interview with Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

Kingsbury, of course, was Williams’ coach at USC, where the No. 1 overall pick in last spring’s NFL Draft won the Heisman Trophy and had the kind of collegiate career that led many to believe he has the potential to be a generational talent at the position.

Prior to landing at USC, Kingsbury spent four seasons as the Arizona Cardinals head coach before being fired and ultimately landing as the Trojans’ quarterbacks coach. Previously, Kingsbury was fired as the Texas Tech head coach in 2013, after six seasons.

Why Kliff Kingsbury to the Chicago Bears makes sense

Syndication: Notre Dame Insider
The former Arizona Cardinals head coach and now USC Trojans assistant coach Kliff Kingsbury talks to quarterback Caleb Williams (13) during the pregame warmup before playing the Arizona State Sun Devils at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Sept. 23, 2023.

This season with Washington, Kingsbury has helped oversee Jayden Daniels’ electrifying rookie season that has the No. 2 overall pick the clubhouse leader as NFL Offensive Rookie of The Year.

Under Kingsbury’s watch, the Commanders posted the NFL’s seventh-leading offense, averaging 369.6 yards per game, while finishing fifth in total offense.

Kingsbury’s past experience and familiarity with Williams could give him a leg-up against other top candidates for the job. That’s especially true if general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears give Williams some input over this coaching hire. Likewise, Kingsbury’s instant success with Daniels could be a formula Chicago would aim to replicate with Williams, beginning in 2025.
