Chicago Cubs sign 35 year old Jon Berti to MLB deal
The Chicago Cubs have made a MLB signing to bolster their roster. Joining the team is 35 year old Jon Berti. He has a lot of experience at third base, second base, and shortstop, but also has played first base and all three of the outfield spots in the past, with a corner outfield spot being the most likely at this point in his career if needed.
Jon Berti has inked a one year deal with the Chicago Cubs
MLB Insider Robert Murray was the first to report that Berti was signing with the Cubs. Shortly afterwards Mark Feinsand indicated that the deal is for one year and $2 million. There is $1.3 million worth of incentives built into the contract.

Jon Berti career overview
In 2018, at 28 years old, Berti made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays. His career took off a year later with the Miami Marlins as through 73 games he slashed .273/.348/.406 with 17 stolen bases. For years after this he remained a nice complimentary piece in the organization, before being traded to the New York Yankees during March of 2024.
Unfortunately, soft tissue injuries derailed Berti’s season last year. He battled a groin issue early on and then a calf strain afterwards. Overall, he has displayed good contact skills throughout his career, he has good speed having topped out at 41 stolen bases in 2022, and defensively he excels at multiple positions.
What role might Jon Berti have with the Cubs in 2025?
At Cubs Convention it was revealed that Chicago will go with internal options at third base, hinting that prospect Matt Shaw is in line to see significant playing time. Signing Berti does not change this as this is likely more of a depth signing. Between the versatility of Berti and recently acquired Vidal Brujan, Craig Counsell has a pair of versatile defenders to choose from should Nico Hoerner not be quite ready for Opening day, Shaw need more time develop or struggle, or any other injuries arise.
