Seattle Seahawks plan to interview Chicago Bears interim head coach for their offensive coordinator opening

Chicago Bears

Through all of the reports and rumors about the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy, Thomas Brown’s name hasn’t been mentioned much. The interim head coach finished the final five games of the season leading the organization, which included a huge victory over Green Bay on the road in week 18.

Even though Brown likely won’t be retained on the Bears staff next season, he should land on his feet elsewhere on a coaching staff in the league rather quickly. A report came out on Thursday regarding the first interview Brown has scored this offseason.

The Seattle Seahawks are set to interview Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported on Thursday that the Seahawks will be interviewing Brown for their open offensive coordinator position.

Prior to his time in Chicago, Brown has held previous offensive coordinating experience in the league. In 2023, Brown was the coordinator for the Carolina Panthers before being let go when Dave Canales got the head coaching gig during the last coaching cycle.

Brown got the gig in Carolina largely due to his time with the Rams under Sean McVay. The now 38-year-old held roles in Los Angeles from 2020-2022. In his last two seasons with the Rams, Brown was the assistant head coach under the highly regarded McVay.

Brown’s ability to work with an offense is easy to see. Having multiple stops in his coaching career could come across as a red flag to some, but to others it shows the wide range of experience he has held on various staffs. He has worked with great coaches and solid players over the last handful of seasons, and Seattle is looking to see if that could translate to their staff after they fired Ryan Grubb.

Grubb lasted just one season in Seattle, after being hired away from the University of Washington. Despite finishing the season with 10 wins and just narrowly missing out on a playoff spot, Seattle’s front office saw a need for change on the offensive side of the ball and decided to move on from Grubb altogether.

Thomas Brown’s time with the Chicago Bears should give him leverage to land a job somewhere next season

Brown was able to get the most out of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams once he was promoted to the interim offensive coordinator role following the firing of Shane Waldron midway through the year. It was clear that Williams felt much more confident and loose with Brown running the show, although there were some growing pains when he was moved from the booth to the field.

The former NFL running back proved to be a solid leader in the locker room despite the 1-4 record he accumulated as the interim head coach. The culture definitely saw a change when Brown took over for Matt Eberflus, which is something he can use to his advantage going into interviews of all kinds this offseason.

The weapons that Brown would have in his offense with the Seahawks would be interesting to watch. He’d have the chance to work with a veteran quarterback in Geno Smith to come up with a good run-pass balance in his scheme. The run game would be supported by the duo of Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, with his premier receivers being DK Metcalf and Jackson Smith Njigba.

Brown is fully deserving of a job on an NFL staff next season, but one position to keep an eye on is the one that he is interviewing for in Seattle.
