The Chicago Cubs finally provide update on core player
The Chicago Cubs finally provided an injury update on one of their core players for this season.
It has taken to the new year, but the Chicago Cubs finally provided an update for second basemen Nico Hoerner’s status for this up coming season.
Nico Hoerner’s long awaited injury update
The 27-year-old Hoerner had surgery earlier this offseason to repair a torn right flexor tendon in his forearm. Since that announcement the Chicago Cubs have been hush one whether or not Hoerner will be ready for Opening Day. After a long wait we finally got out update!
The Cubs published a report at MLB.com giving roster and injury updates for the team and Nico Hoerner’s name was finally mentioned. In their report the Cubs state that Hoerner will:
“focus on his rehab over the offseason and be assessed at the start of Spring Training in February to determine his next steps.”

That’s a promising sign for the former Gold Glover and something for fans to be optimistic about. If all goes well in Nico Hoerner’a rehab assignments and comes into the Cubs Spring Training healthy and ready to go, there’s not doubt he’ll be ready to go for Opening Day.
It was hard to believe Nico Hoerner wasn’t named an All-Star for the Chicago Cubs in 2024 given how good he was. In 151 games last season Hoerner had 35 doubles, 7 HRs, 31 stolen bases, with a slash line of .273/.335/.373 for an OPS and OPS+ of .708 and 101. Looking at Nico Hoerner’s Baseball Savant page he proved that he was a snub for the All-Star team.
Being one of the best second basemen in all of baseball with ranking in the 99th percentiles for both whiff and K percentage, the 95th percentile for his base running value, 92nd for squaring the ball up, and the 87th percentile for his fielding value.
The Cubs need Nico Hoerner to be healthy and be the potential All-Star he can be for the Cubs to have success. With Hoerner being a guys who puts the ball in play at a high rate and gets on-base at a high-rate with a career OBP of .338 he will be a key part of the Chicago Cubs lineup. According to FanGraphs they project he will bat in the sixth spot being his double play partner Dansby Swanson, who also had surgery this offseason, but will be ready for Opening Day.
A healthy Nico Hoerner would be another key the Cubs will have to potentially make the playoffs this season. Not only having Nico Hoerner’s bat in the lineup will be a big part, but having his Gold Glove level defense to match with his Gold Glove level double play partner will be essential as well. Hopefully all goes well and Cub fans will see Hoerner in the Opening Day lineup.
