Chicago White Sox: truly impressive loss record stat
The Chicago White Sox were not only the worst team in baseball last season, but they were the worst team in Major League Baseball history with setting the all-time loss record at 41-121.
The White Sox were also one of the league’s worst teams from an offensive standpoint ranking dead last in team batting average (.221) and runs scored (507).
Within the context of the whole season, however, one statistic from the White Sox’s historic season stands out amongst the rest.

This is incredible from the standpoint that the White Sox grinded out games and did fight to stay in them. If a few of these games, go the White Sox way or even if they were .500 in one-run games a whole other story could’ve been told about the White Sox season. Maybe if the White Sox didn’t set the all-time loss record their offseason could have been a lot different and maybe Garrett Crochet could still be here.
According to Statmuse in one or fewer run games the White Sox were even worse hitting just 12 home runs and striking out 430 times. It’s fun to speculate all the what-ifs, but sadly the White Sox were just not good enough and were just too young of a team to put up more than a fight against teams.
Being in so many one-run ball games, however, showed that the White Sox at least had some fight in them till the bitter end. That is a good sign and a jumping-off point for the White Sox to start at going into this season.
An exciting season ahead
The White Sox will have their pitchers and catchers report in the next nine days with their position players following a short time after. The White Sox will look to come into this season fresh and ready to play so a repeat of last season doesn’t happen.
This spring will have many interesting position battles to watch with catcher and shortstop being the most notable. The White Sox invited 24 of their prospects to camp this spring with the two most noteworthy being lefties Noah Schults and Hagen Smith. Both have real shots at cracking into the White Sox starting rotation with this season being another building year for the Southsiders.
Another building year
This season will be the second full season of the Chicago White Sox rebuild, and it will be key for them to see what they have in their young prospects.
The White Sox will be playing as many of their young guys as possibly with mixing in the veterans they signed so they can get they’re at bats to boost their trade value.
This season may bring another 100-loss season, but if all goes well it should be a crucial part in the White Sox rebuild and their young players development to go into next season looking to compete more.
