OTL: Winning Cures All, But Let’s Not Ignore the Problems
With Week 2 in the books and the Ravens getting into the win column for the first time this season, we have a chance to do something that may still be a little early, but something that I feel is going to be worthwhile anyway: we’re going to talk about nuance and context.
All four of Lamar Jackson’s touchdown passes targeted a receiver over 10 yards downfield against the Browns.
Since the start of 2024, Lamar Jackson has thrown 32 TD passes over 10 air yards, 10 more than the next closest QB (Joe Burrow, 22).#CLEvsBAL | #RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/pPGoHJ3s2k

Ravens up 10-3 at half.
Horrible showing by their offense. 81 total yards, 14 rushing, 2/8 on third down, Lamar Jackson has been off through the air with his targets.
Luckily the Browns offense not much better and the Ravens defense has done its part.

It makes so much sense that, with this iteration of our Baltimore Ravens, those two posts are about the same game. If you only looked at the box score or the final line from the game, you’d assume that the Ravens came out and took care of business all day against an inferior opponent, beating them handily at home. However, to Morgan’s point, the first half performance would have you thinking something completely different, and it brings me to the point I want to discuss today.
Week 1: 40 points, 432 yards, loss
Week 2: 41 points, 244 yards, winDoesn’t matter how you get it done, as long as you get it done. Ravens move to 1-1.

Jonas captures the essence of what we see in a lot of football talk from fans and pundits alike. The NFL is a results-based business, and most aren’t going to focus on how you win, just how many you can stack in the W column. But as has been so often pointed out, the Ravens have a penchant for letting bad habits stick around, and it worries a lot of us for what it means the team is going to look like in big games, none more so than in the postseason. While it’s tempting to fall into the trap of feeling like winning heals all wounds, it’s a good way to get complacent when focusing on either fixing mistakes or continuing to make things work when they’re going well.
Ravens can’t score from 1-yard line and the boo birds are out.
1st down: Mitchell-Paden can’t catch Jackson pass in back of EZ
2nd down: false start on Mitchell-Paden
2nd down: Mark Andrews can’t hold onto Jackson pass
3rd down: Jackson is sacked by Garrett.

Todd Monken gotta stank that playbook up
This ain’t it

The adjustment to the air in the second half showed the versatility of the offense, and it’s nice to see them be able to beat a team multiple ways again. Sure, you can say “It’s only the Browns,” but through two weeks, they’ve surrendered the fewest yards of any team in the league. The Ravens having a few short fields certainly influenced that number, but the pass game’s effectiveness was much needed given that the run game was a non-starter in the first half. Derrick Henry was extremely quiet all game based on an insistence to continue running the ball to the right as the O-line struggled, but what I’m taking away from this more than anything is that the offensive unit is missing Pat Ricard badly.

Browns DL brutally crushed the Ravens OL in 5 man pass protection.
This unit needs help from backs and TE’s.

Ricard’s injury limits the full depth of what your playbook can be, and we saw some of it in the choice by Todd Monken to gravitate away from option runs. The concern is feeling like the offense is less multi-dimensional, and if this game hadn’t been against an opponent that scored three in the first half and instead against, say, a team that they’re getting ready to face that put up 28 first-half points…
For the first time in franchise history, the @Lions have produced a game with:
– 500+ total net yards
– 5 passing TDs
– 2 rushing TDs#OnePride pic.twitter.com/I4LWryzs5V— Detroit Lions PR (@LionsPR) September 14, 2025
…you’re then in a situation where you have to throw the ball instead of playing to the strengths of the run.
John Harbaugh said Lamar Jackson bailed them out of bad plays yesterday against the Browns:
“It was a tough game yesterday against a really great defense. It was really tough sledding … yet he kept pressing.

Defensively, the second-half adjustments sending pressure paid off in spades as they forced multiple turnovers, but that unit isn’t without concern, either. There were a few situations where soft coverage once again gave up easy yards, a deflected pass was caught for a touchdown for the second week in a row, and as a team, they’ve still only managed to notch three sacks in two games, with Tavius Robinson’s strip sack the only one not credited to Nnamdi Madubuike. Beyond that, there’s the possibility that they’re going to be down Kyle Van Noy and Marlon Humphrey for the next game, two absences they can ill afford against Detroit’s big-time offense.
John Harbaugh declined to offer any real injury update for Kyle Van Noy (hamstring); later Marlon Humphrey (groin) tied into this due to not wanting to tip hand for Lions. pic.twitter.com/gJ2VJQErKv

Understand, this is not me trying to be Debbie Downer the week after Baltimore beat up a division opponent. This is me trying to keep the focus on what so many had pointed out after Week 1 in that this is still very much an imperfect team, a work in progress that needs to focus on fixing the issues that carried over from last season, because it’s a long year, and it’ll only get longer if they put off the necessary changes.
