Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams sounds off on red zone issues

The outcome of the Chicago Bears‘ 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens could have been much different if things had gone differently in the first quarter.

The Bears had opportunities to score touchdowns on their first two possessions, but settled for field goals of 32 and 39 yards to take a 6-0 lead before Baltimore would score a touchdown on their first drive in the second quarter.
The eight-point difference played a huge role in the game, and probably led to Caleb Williams forcing a pass that was intercepted in the fourth quarter when Chicago trailed 16-13. The Ravens pretty much sealed the game with a touchdown two plays after the only turnover of the game.

During his postgame news conference, Williams, like head coach Ben Johnson, referenced penalties and the lack of efficiency in the red zone as a problem the Bears have to address.
“Penalties and being able to score in the red zone,” Williams said of what the offense needed to fix in Week 9. “We get into those moments, and we are either not scoring and converting in those moments, and we know that we can. We could have been up 14 [points] in those first two drives that we had. That would have created a bunch of momentum for us.
“That’s how it’s been a good amount of the year, especially in these past two games. We’ve been in the red zone a bunch, and (we’re) not necessarily being able to punch it in, in the high red (zone).”

 Caleb Williams needs to lead

Williams finished 25-of-38 for 285 yards and one interception in the loss. He added three tushes for 24 yards.
Williams believes he needs to do a better job of leading the offense in the red zone.
“We just have to find a way to get into the end zone, and we have to find a way to stop the bleeding when you start bleeding,” Williams said. “I think I can do a better job with that, helping out and leading these guys.”
Williams and the offense should have taken advantage of one of the league’s worst defenses in Baltimore.
The Bears will have a chance to show improvement when they take on a Cincinnati Bengals team in Week 9 that allowed the Justin Fields-led New York Jets to score 39 points on Sunday.
