Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman plays coy on independent status

Southern California Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley and Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman shake hands after the game at United Airlines Field at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Notre Dame is college football’s lone independent. They’re the one team in the sport without a conference, which has its pros and cons. Will that remain the case in the future? That depends, but head coach Marcus Freeman wasn’t willing to commit one way or the other. It’s become an intrinsic part of the Fighting Irish’s DNA, but there is a world where they eventually join a conference.

Could Notre Dame ever join a conference? It’s certainly possible. One of the most unique things about the Fighting Irish is their status, but they might one day give that up. Conferences have realigned, disappeared, and changed altogether, so things are always shifting. Marcus Freeman opened up about it on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast via CBS Sports.

“The future of college athletics is always uncertain,” Freeman stated. “With private equity, with what’s going to happen with these conferences, if there’s a time that Notre Dame has to join a conference to ensure they can have the same opportunities to make the Playoff as everybody else, then I’m sure our administration would do it. Currently, the administration and myself and all of us feel confident that if we win the games we’re supposed to win, we take care of the business we’re supposed to take care of, we have just as good of a chance to make the playoffs as anybody else.”

For now, there’s no reason to consider joining a conference, but that could change. Notre Dame’s path back to the College Football Playoff is precarious since they are an independent. They can’t win a conference, so they can’t secure an automatic bid. And being 12th right now puts them on the fringe. The automatic bids might allow a team ranked lower, in this case South Florida, to get in over Notre Dame. That might force them to reconsider being independent.

There are pros and cons to the current setup, and the Irish have the ability to adjust to those in the future. They’re not planning to at this present moment, though.
