Notre Dame expected to rise rankings even without game this week

Notre Dame has successfully returned from the brink. After falling to 24th in the AP Poll, the Fighting Irish are back in the top 12, albeit literally 12th. That’s significant since the top 12 make the College Football Playoff, more or less. With a week off to reset after a crucial ranked win last week, the Fighting Irish could continue to rise despite not doing anything.

Sometimes, not losing is all a team needs to do. Winning, if it’s not impressive or it’s a close win against a bad team, can sometimes result in a team dropping from their previous rank. This will especially be true once the College Football Playoff committee starts releasing their own rankings, not just the AP Poll.

Nevertheless, doing nothing can sometimes be a good thing in college football, and it’s poised to be just that for Notre Dame this week. They’re off, but teams ahead of them are not, and key losses could send the Irish up into the top 10.

ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote, “The hierarchy of teams ranked ninth to 15th above tells us quite a bit. Two-loss Notre Dame obviously needs a little bit of help, but considering there are head-to-heads between No. 9 and 13 and No. 10 and 15 this week, the Fighting Irish will likely move up a couple of spots despite being on a bye week. Their strength-of-schedule numbers will only get worse from here, however, so they need to keep looking the part as they have in recent weeks.”

Ole Miss and Oklahoma play this week, and that game could have major ramifications for Notre Dame’s spot. Missouri and Vanderbilt’s contest could, too. Of course, the Irish need the higher-ranked teams to lose, but it can certainly happen. Furthermore, with so many teams ranked near or higher than 12, losses are inevitable, so it would be a big surprise if the Irish came out of this week with the same rank. And after such a tumultuous start, that’s a big win for a team trying to work back into the conversation.
