OTL: EDC Gets to Work Trying to Salvage 2025 Season
Just when you thought the season couldn’t get any scarier, GM Eric DeCosta starts the reconstruction process. And boy was the onset of that crazy:
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BALTIMORE?!?
— Zach Bollinger (@zachbollinger18) October 7, 2025
Earlier on Tuesday, it was reported that the Ravens had signed veteran Safety CJ Gardner-Johnson to their practice squad.
Free-agent safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is signing with Ravens practice squad, per his agent Kevin Conner of @unisportsmgmt.
Gardner-Johnson still gets his fully guaranteed 2025 salary with the Texans so there is little financial impact for the Ravens. pic.twitter.com/InJnQ6c2wi
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 7, 2025
Can confirm the Ravens signing of safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to their practice squad. Was first reported by @AdamSchefter.
It makes sense on several levels, starting with the Ravens have had questions at the No. 3 safety spot since Ar’Darius Washington tore Achilles.— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) October 7, 2025
CJGJ has bounced around the league a bit but has put together a nice career. The potential issue (which is also the reason he’s bounced around so much) is his attitude. HC John Harbaugh and company will have to navigate the ups-and-downs of CJGJ:
Ravens are like “plz someone go be a prick” and suddenly have CJGJ and Jaire Alexander playing 40 snaps each. Popcorn ready for the show https://t.co/EvqSWssKGz
— Spencer Schultz (@ravens4dummies) October 7, 2025
CJ Gardner Johnson is either going to make a nice impact on the Ravens or he’s going to get cooked, get in Harbaugh’s face, and be released.
— RAMEY (@HoodieRamey) October 7, 2025
But in terms of on-the-field impact, I think he’s a great addition, and initially, most Ravens fans were thinking the same as Jeff Zrebiec and Spencer Schultz:
Gardner-Johnson will also allow the Ravens to move Kyle Hamilton, when he’s healthy, closer to the line of scrimmage and closer to the ball, where Baltimore badly needs his play-making skills. Ravens aren’t stopping the run or disrupting the QB. Hamilton can help in both areas https://t.co/MWF0xaI28g
— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) October 7, 2025
With Kyle Hamilton out Sunday w/groin injury, the Ravens played undrafted rookie Reuben Lowery 70 snaps at safety alongside another rookie, Malaki Starks. Hamilton’s status for Sunday is uncertain. Gardner-Johnson gives them another option. https://t.co/3wWqShGeX4
— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) October 7, 2025
They can’t have Keyon Martin taking 40 snaps again. Just a liability in the run game https://t.co/MZhKg27KLH
— Spencer Schultz (@ravens4dummies) October 7, 2025
Then, an even bigger head-scratcher happened:
Another trade, per sources:
Ravens receive:
Safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Chargers receive:
Edge Odafe Oweh and Rams 7th in 2027.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 7, 2025
Edge Odafe Oweh is in the final year of his contract and scheduled to be a free agent. The Ravens now save roughly $8 million against their cap. pic.twitter.com/NEuqigLxli
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 7, 2025
Obviously, there’s a few ways to look at this. First and foremost, thinking only about the Safety position, Baltimore has added two starting-caliber players to the back end. That could mean a number of things:
Gilman’s been a solid starter for the Chargers’ defense the past few years.
Looks like the Ravens are finally embracing the need for more three-safety looks and getting Kyle Hamilton closer to the line of scrimmage. https://t.co/KUxkinLCfZ
— Jonas Shaffer (@jonas_shaffer) October 7, 2025
Definitely not.
I’m sure the move is to put Kyle back in the slot and possibly Marlon outside when he’s back.
I think it helps the backend.
But the fundamental issue is the pass rush so without an add on the DL, not sure how much it helps the overall unit! https://t.co/14F5x1JWvD
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) October 7, 2025
If the Oweh and Gardner-Johnson moves were just a scheme to get Kyle Hamilton back to SCB, I’d like them a lot more.
I think it’s more likely they have additional injury issues at Safety that will be on the report tomorrow based on the 2 moves made for safeties.#RavensFlock
— Ken McKusick (@FilmstudyRavens) October 7, 2025
We’ll root against Ken McKusick this time around. But either way, it’s a major shake-up for a Ravens secondary that’s struggled. What does it mean for Kyle Hamilton? What does it mean for Malaki Starks? What does it mean for the corners?
And then you get to the pass rush side of things.
First and foremost, I disagree with anyone who says losing Odafe Oweh is a big blow to the team’s ability to rush the passer. He had moments, yes, but was a major disappointment in the grand scheme of things.
If you believe that Oweh wasn’t adding much to the pass rush.
And you believe that the Ravens weren’t extending him.
This is a win.
– Gilman can take starter snaps.
– Kyle Hamilton’s role can be altered.
– Mike Green’s development is accelerated.
– Draft capital is added. https://t.co/cOo4FuuB4Q— Matt Wise (@TheMattWise) October 8, 2025
Ravens’ 2021 first-round draft pick (31st overall) Odafe Oweh’s time in Baltimore comes to an end:
67 games (25 starts)
148 tackles (103 solo), 26 TFL
23 sacks
66 QB hits
7 forced fumbles (3 recoveries)
9⃣9⃣ was off to an underwhelming start in a contract year… pic.twitter.com/y0yfrrQj3o
— Bobby Trosset (@bobbybaltim0re) October 7, 2025
Odafe Oweh never developed into what we thought his potential could be. Ravens decide to cut bait and get some assets.
Unless another move is coming with the cap space, this shows where their contention thoughts are.#RavensFlock
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) October 7, 2025
Ravens had extension talks w/Oweh, a pending FA, this past offseason, but they didn’t get very far. It seemed likely that he was headed to market in March.
This allows Ravens to get something immediate in return and create more flexibility in secondary with Gilman addition.— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) October 7, 2025
Oweh had all the athleticism in the world, but couldn’t put it together consistently across seasons. That said, the trade does leave Baltimore with little depth at EDGE, not to mention across its entire D-Line:
The Ravens’ OLB room with Odafe Oweh traded:
Kyle Van Noy
Tavius Robinson
Mike Green
David Ojabo
Malik Hamm (practice squad)
Kaimon Rucker (practice squad)
Adisa Isaac (IR)Ravens are 26th in the NFL in pressure rate this season when not blitzing, per @SIS_SportsInfo.
— Jonas Shaffer (@jonas_shaffer) October 7, 2025
As a result of that, most people anticipate a corresponding move to be made soon:
After going 1-4, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta begins making moves in Baltimore:
– Signed S CJ Gardner Johnson
– Aquired S Alohi Gilman
– Traded LB Odafe OwehMore to come?

— Ravens Nation ð™‡ð™„ð™‘𙀠(@LIVERavenNation) October 7, 2025
This is NOT a seller’s move. Gilman is on an expiring contract. Selling would have been getting draft picks and/or a controllable contract. Keeping Oweh for the end of the year may have even offered a better comp pick. https://t.co/EO5gjDj5xE
— Baltimore Beatdown (@BmoreBeatdown) October 7, 2025
As Adam Schefter initially reported, the Oweh deal freed up roughly $8M in cap space, while the CJGJ signing barely impacted Baltimore’s cap at all. So, assuming EDC is done reshaping the secondary, what’s he going to do up front? I have my two personal favorites:
NEED.
THIS. pic.twitter.com/txCjNeirj9
— Ravens Nation ð™‡ð™„ð™‘𙀠(@LIVERavenNation) October 8, 2025
Thibodeaux was a top five player in his class for me. Loved his college tape. Would consider him a solid upgrade from Oweh. Potential good starter. Better run defender than Oweh has been. https://t.co/BxUgpx6wyJ
— Spencer Schultz (@ravens4dummies) October 7, 2025
At the same time, an IDL move may be even more important, at least when it comes to signing big names. Could Dexter Lawrence, Jeffery Simmons, or Quinnen Williams be attainable? If so, it might make sense to pull the trigger there, instead.
If they do, what happens on the EDGE? Stone makes an interesting point here – but is it one EDC and Baltimore fans could trust?
LB Trenton Simpson had the highest pass rush grade for the Ravens vs the Texans.
– 79.6 Pass Rush Grade (1st)
Simpson made a living playing OLB at Clemson. Was one of the best pass rushing linebackers in the nation during his sophomore season. pic.twitter.com/Vuhyk1YFoM
— STONE (@stone_2x) October 7, 2025
Either way, it seems unlikely that the Ravens give up on the season altogether.
Don’t believe me? Just ask Steelers Safety Juan Thornhill:
I really don’t want anybody to think that the Ravens are done. They aren’t done. I promise you that. I’ve seen them enough, and I have played enough ball to know. They have a lot of guys injured right now and a lot of bad things happening for them, but once they figure it out, I guarantee they are not done. By the time we play them, they will be back to form.
Don’t believe him? Ask Vegas:
Sports books believe in the #Ravens a lot more than fans do.@KalshiSports still has the #Ravens above 50% to make the postseason!#RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/hQldx3iOYM
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) October 7, 2025
It’s not time to give up on the season just yet. Let’s see how things shake out this week before making any rash judgments!
