Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan makes embarrassing admission on Derik Queen
The Chicago Bulls had a chance to see what could have been when the team was defeated 143-130 by the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.

Rookie center Derik Queen scored eight points, added five rebounds, one block, and one assist for the Pelicans in front of 16,690 fans at Smoothie King Center. The Bulls dropped to 9-8 with the loss, and New Orleans earned just its third win of the season.

Before the game, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan suggested the team was close to selecting Queen in this year’s draft.
“(Queen) was one of the guys the front office asked me to watch,” Donovan said, via Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic. “I spent time with him on his visit (to Chicago). His head coach at Maryland, Kevin Willard and I are very, very close…. Certainly (Willard) was all aboard there. There was probably five or six guys they wanted me to watch film on.
“And I had talked to Kevin, and Kevin thought really, really IQ, all those things.”

The Chicago Bulls panicked
Unfortunately, the Bulls appeared to panic when they were on the clock… and went with the same position they drafted a year earlier in Matas Buzelis in stead of finding a replacement for an aging Nikola Vucevic.
“When the draft actually came, there’s things that happened in that moment, you’ve got five minutes to make a pick,” Donovan said without irony. “I think that they were looking at Noa as an opportunity long term. ‘This guy fits the way we really would like to play.’ I did not get from the front office, or even the scouts, like ‘he’s not a fit.’
“I think they felt like (Derik) was a very, very good player… But i think the way we were playing, I think they maybe thought that Noa, maybe from an upside standpoint, with another athletic wing, long defender, is maybe something we
need defensively.”
Queen appears to be a steal for New Orleans. He came into Monday night averaging 12.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.
Essengue went 0-of-2 shooting but added a steal in his two minutes on the court Monday night. He has yet to score a point, add a rebound, or make an assist in six minutes played this season over a span of two games.
