Former Chicago Cubs spark plug DFA’d ahead of tender deadline
From 2022-2024, Chicago Cubs fans got to experience the ups and downs of offensive spark plug Christopher Morel. The former Cub provided plenty of fireworks across two and a half seasons in Chicago, including 60 total home runs. Unfortunately, the strikeouts and low-on base numbers ultimately led to him being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Significantly, Morel’s trade to the Rays helped set up one of the Cubs bigger trades in franchise history, as initially Chicago sent him and two pitching prospects to Tampa in exchange for Isaac Paredes. The following offseason, Paredes was a piece in the trade package that brought Kyle Tucker to Chicago.
Meanwhile, Morel remained in the Rays organization, up until just a few days ago when he was designated for assignment (DFA’d) ahead of the tender deadline.

Since arriving in Tampa, Morel has struggled. Through 154 total games with the Rays, he has a -1.1 bWAR, has slashed .208/.277/.355, and strikeouts have remained a major issue. He was projected to make $2.6MM in arbitration this offseason. Morel figures to be non-tendered on Friday’s official tender deadline, thus making him a free agent.
Morel’s DFA temporarily places him at a crossroads, but it also gives him a chance at a fresh start. Despite his struggles in Tampa, the tools that once made him such an electrifying presence in Chicago haven’t disappeared. Another club may view him as a low-risk rebound candidate, especially if they believe they can help him trim the strikeouts.
