NFL hurt Chicago Bears in big way before Steelers game

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson's believes he needs to have patience with the offense in 2025.

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers ruled quarterback Aaron Rodgers questionable to play the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Rodgers is battling a hand injury on his left (non-throwing) hand. If Rodgers cannot play, backup quarterback Mason Rudolph is set to make the start for Pittsburgh.

The Bears defense will have a hard time taking advantage of the quarterback issue for the Steelers because of significant injuries in Week 12.

Chicago ruled out all three starting linebackers T.J. Edwards (hand/hamstring), Tremaine Edmunds (groin), and Noah Sewell (elbow). Edmunds was placed on injured reserve for Saturday.

More news: Chicago Bears have worriesome update for All-Pro before Steelers game

The Bears had more troubling news to offer for the defense on Saturday. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, cornerbacks Kyle Gordon (calf) and Jaylon Johnson (groin) will remain on injured reserve for Week 12. Chicago hopes they can play the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

“Bears defensive backs Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson – both questionable for Sunday vs. Pittsburgh – won’t be activated this week, per sources,” Fowler said. “But the team is hopeful that both could come off IR for next week against Philly if all goes well.”

NFL schedule makers hurt the Bears

Johnson and Gordon were both full participants at practice on Friday.

However, the news from Fowler shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

The Bears will have a short week to prepare for the Eagles in Week 13. It would make sense for Chicago not to ask Gordon and Johnson to play two games in five days coming off an injury.

The NFL schedule makers didn’t do the Bears any favors by giving Chicago a short week in the midst of one of the more challenging parts of the team’s schedule in the middle of the season. It makes it harder for the Bears to play its best but battered players in games the team needs to win.

The Bears are facing four teams in a row that made the playoffs last season: Minnesota Vikings, Steelers, Eagles, and Green Bay Packers.
