Earlier this week, Kevin Huerter delivered a masterful performance for the Chicago Bulls facing the Denver Nuggets. By the end of the week, he grabbed attention again, but this time for the wrong reasons. Huerter was ejected from Chicago’s 143-107 home loss to Miami on Friday night after tapping the ball in frustration over a foul call, sending it off the back of a referee.

On Friday, during the third quarter of a double-digit deficit against the Miami Heat, Kevin Huerter was ejected from the game, per Bulls on CHSN. The Bulls trailed 78-57 with just over eight minutes remaining when Huerter was called for a foul defending Pelle Larsson in midair.

The ball bounced near the free-throw line, and Huerter tapped it toward NBA referee Che Flores, the league’s first openly non-binary and transgender official, who was signaling the foul near midcourt.

Head coach Billy Donovan reacted angrily as the play was reviewed, and veteran referee Tony Brothers immediately assessed a technical foul on Huerter. Huerter raised both hands in disbelief as he realized he had been removed from the game.

Unsurprisingly, Bulls fans at the United Center and online reacted with outrage, and a loud chorus of boos echoed throughout the arena.

“Does the NBA know that it has a ref problem?” one user wrote.

Another noted that the officiating is spotty not just in the NBA, “And you know what? Go watch (or look at the box) of Northwestern/Virginia. 51 personal fouls. These refs, across all sports, are a fucking disaster. We need to start loudly boycotting sponsors.”

“How can I make this about me? Very easily given ejection” another user added.

One user also took a jab at Tony Brothers, “Brothers need to retire. Huerter has nvr done anything to a ref.”

“I was frustrated at the call, but again, I apologize if that was too much. Obviously it was,” Huerter said during his post-game availability. “I was not meaning to throw the ball at the official.”

While the ejection grabbed headlines, many see it as an overreaction in a frustrating game for Huerter and the Bulls. His tap of the ball was clearly born out of irritation over how the game was going, not intent to disrespect, and his prompt apology reinforced that.
