Chicago Bears starter dealing with potential ‘multi-week’ injury

NFL: Chicago Bears Training Camp

The Chicago Bears could be without one of the key pieces of coordinator Dennis Allen’s defense for a while.

Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has missed the past two days of practice after suffering a groin injury in the Bears’ Week 11 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, putting his streak of not missing a game since the 2023 season in serious jeopardy.

There’s also a chance that this won’t be a one-week absence, Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Steelers, for Edmunds, either.

Chicago Bears LB Tremaine Edmunds’ injury possibly ‘week-to-week’ Insider says

According to Bears Insider Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, Edmunds could be dealing with a week-to-week injury.

“One source said there’s concern it’s a multiweek injury,” Biggs writes, of Edmunds. “But given how durable Edmunds has been in his career — he became the youngest player in NFL history to reach 100 career games last season at 26 — a quick return also wouldn’t be surprising.

“Missing Edmunds for even one game would be a significant loss as he has been enjoying the finest of his three seasons in a Bears uniform. He leads the team with 89 tackles — 36 more than the next-closest defender, free safety Kevin Byard III — and has four interceptions and nine pass breakups. A move from the middle to the weak side has elevated Edmunds’ production and impact.”

Edmunds has been one of the Bears’ most reliable defenders so far this season, and his injury adds more adversity to Chicago’s linebacking corps, which had three players miss practice on Thursday leading up to Sunday afternoon’s game against the Steelers.

Since signing in Chicago before the 2023 season, Edmunds has appeared in 42 games, posting 312 total tackles, intercepting nine passes, returning one for a touchdown, forcing two fumbles, and recovering one.

Earlier this week, the Bears signed former Detroit Lions linebacker and All-Pro special teams ace, Jalen Reeves-Maybin to the practice squad, and if either Edmunds or Edwards are unable to go, there is a legitimate possibility Chicago could elevate him to the active roster as early as this week’s game.
