Chicago Bears HC suggests Caleb Williams is a game manager

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams

On Tuesday, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson better explained what he meant when he said he was unhappy with the passing offense before getting ready to play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

The Bears relied on a power running game to beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, rushing for 281 yards in the 24-15 win.

On Monday, Johnson told the media that the team had discussed Caleb Williams’ poor 58.1 completion percentage for the season. He completed just 47.2 percent of his passes against the Eagles.

Johnson suggested the Bears were winning despite the passing game, and singled out his quarterback for missing easy targets.

“The primary receiver when he’s open, we’ve got to make sure we hit him,” Johnson said.

During his news conference on Tuesday, the first-year head coach appeared sensitive to the way his comments were taken. He softened the blow by calling Williams a game manger.

“When I made that comment yesterday it’s easily construed as I’m not happy with the quarterback,” Johnson said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “That’s not the case whatsoever. He continues to get better each and every week and I couldn’t be more pleased with how he played last week.

“And I know what the stats say. Throw those out the window. He’s doing a really good job managing the ballgame. That’s step No. 1 for the quarterback.”

The Bears drafted Williams with the No. 1 pick in 2024 to be more than a game manger. New England Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye is playing at MVP level.

That’s what Chicago wants to see.

Williams has shown improvement, but he’s not where Johnson or fans want him to be.

Caleb Williams' ability to lead game-winning drives could cause mental gaffes for opposing defenders.
