Packers’ Xavier McKinney highlights Ben Johnson’s impact on the Bears

Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore (2) is tackled by Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney (29) to set up first and goal inside the five yard line on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

The Chicago Bears rolled to an impressive win last week. From the other sideline, Green Bay Packers defensive back Xavier McKinney acknowledged how much Chicago’s offense has changed, saying Johnson has completely revamped the group.

“They’re creative. The play calling is a lot more creative than what they’ve done in the past,” McKinney said via Ryan Wood. “Obviously, they’ve got playmakers on their team, and then you add Ben Johnson as their HC calling the plays, it seems to me that the play book is really open.”

Currently holding the NFC’s top seed, the Bears have blown past expectations in Johnson’s first season. Chicago owns the league’s sixth-ranked offense at 373.4 yards per game, sits second in rushing at 153.8, and ranks eighth in scoring with 26.1 points per outing.

It appears Johnson is applying the same offensive magic that helped elevate the Lions, guiding Chicago to one of the league’s most productive attacks even as Caleb Williams works through accuracy issues.

Johnson pushed the rookie to reach a 70 percent completion mark, but Williams hasn’t approached that target, a concern the coach openly addressed during his Monday press conference.

“We gotta fundamentally be correct. The primary receiver, when he’s open, we’ve got to make sure we hit him. And then, all of our pass catchers, we just harped on it today, we need to be more disciplined in our route detail,” said the Bears head coach during his media availability.

The Bears have still generated the eighth-most points in the league this season, and Williams has kept his turnover rate in check with only five interceptions on 396 pass attempts.

Ben Johnson and the Bears, now 9-3, head into Week 14 with a high-stakes showdown against Xavier McKinney and the 8-3-1 Packers, squaring off for the NFC North lead on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET in Green Bay.
