“We’re winning in spite of our passing game, not because of it”: Ben Johnson pushes for sharpness from Caleb Williams
The Chicago Bears kept rolling with another impressive win last week, climbing to the No. 1 seed in the NFC and shattering expectations in Ben Johnson’s first season. Their five game streak, capped by a Thanksgiving victory, has pushed them to a 9-3 record and the top of the playoff race, yet Johnson admitted the team still lags in one important area that needs attention as the stretch run approaches.
After taking over in the offseason, Johnson challenged Caleb Williams to hit a 70 percent completion rate, but the rookie hasn’t come close. Williams has yet to reach that mark in any game and enters December completing just 58.1 percent of his throws, the lowest percentage among the 33 quarterbacks who qualify this season.
Johnson addressed Williams’ accuracy concerns during his press conference on Monday. He pointed out that last Thursday’s matchup in Philadelphia came with swirling winds, yet he still emphasized that sharpening Williams’ ball placement is a major focus, saying it’s something the staff continues to work through with both the quarterback and the entire offense.
Ben Johnson challenges the Bears

“We gotta fundamentally be correct. The primary receiver, when he’s open, we’ve got to make sure we hit him. And then, all of our pass catchers, we just harped on it today, we need to be more disciplined in our route detail,” said the Bears head coach.
“It’s not where it needs to be. Our depth’s not proper all the time. Our steps [aren’t]. Everybody has a role to play to get this pass game cleaned up. It’s not where it needs to be. We’re winning in spite of our passing game, not because of it and none of us are pleased with that right now.”

The Bears have still produced the eighth-most points in the league this season, and Williams has kept his interception rate below the league average with just five picks on 396 attempts.
Even so, his completion percentage remains the one glaring weakness in an otherwise steady offense. Chicago needs that number to climb if Williams is going to grow into the quarterback they envision, and any progress over these final weeks would strengthen the Bears’ push to stay in the playoff picture well into January.
