The one thing holding Chicago Bulls back from Anthony Davis revealed
Trade chatter around the Chicago Bulls and Anthony Davis has grown louder in recent weeks. Davis is working through his first full campaign with the Dallas Mavericks after last February’s blockbuster swap that shipped him to Dallas and sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers.
Right now, the Bulls are trying to shape a future around their emerging core, built on players like Coby White, Josh Giddey, and Matas Buzelis. They also view French rookie Noa Essengue, the No. 12 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, as steadily carving out his spot within that group.
Because of that, Chicago hopes to strengthen its young group by adding someone with Davis’s impact, especially on the defensive end. Even so, the Bulls are not ready to gamble. Jamal Collier of ESPN reports that team officials have made it clear they will not move any of their core pieces to bring in Davis. They want to see this group grow into a true contender before considering a move that breaks it apart.
What it costs for Anthony Davis to join the Bulls

Right now, the Bulls have the flexibility to trade up to five first- and second-round draft picks while retaining about $70 million in cap space for next season. They also hold control of all their first-round picks for the next seven years.
On the upside, Davis offers Chicago a versatile skill set. He is a top-tier defender and a strong rim protector. Offensively, he can score efficiently and complement Giddey in pick-and-roll situations. Beyond his on-court contributions, Davis brings veteran leadership and championship experience. He also shares local ties with the Bulls alongside Buzelis, Ayo Dosunmu, and Jevon Carter.

On the other hand, Davis carries some concerns and risks. His injury history is notable, highlighted by a recent calf issue, and he has played more than 56 games in a season only once, during 2019-2020. Financially, he commands a hefty $60 million annual salary, which would likely force Chicago to part with young talent and make significant adjustments to their payroll to fit him in.
“I don’t think going out and chasing X megastar is the way to proceed — at least today,” one of ESPN’s sources remarked.
