Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

With the Chicago Bears earning a 22-16 win in overtime over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, the team had an extra day to prepare to travel to play the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 17.

While the Bears could use the extra day of rest as a minor advantage before playing a critical game against the 49ers (who defeated the Indianapolis Colts on “Monday Night Football” in Week 16) to decide NFC seeding for the playoffs, several players are battling an illness before Sunday night’s game.

Per the Bears, wide receiver and special teams returner Devin Duverney, linebacker D’Marco Jackson, and defensive back Nick McCloud did not practice on Christmas Eve due to illness.

Chicago will hope those three will be healthy by the time the team travels to San Francisco. However, with three players battling an illness, there’s a possibility that a contagious illness could spread through the 53-man roster and practice squad before Sunday night’s game.

The injury report will be something to keep an eye on this week as more names could be added.

The 49ers enter the game with an 11-4 record (No. 5 in the conference), tied with the Los Angeles Rams for second place in the NFC West. They trail the 12-3 Seattle Seahawks by one game in the division with two games remaining in the regular season.

The 11-4 Bears hold the NFC’s No. 2 seed. With a win over the 49ers on Sunday night, Chicago would earn its first NFC North title since 2018 and second since 2010.
