The Chicago Bears will host the Detroit Lions on Sunday to finish the regular season.

More News: Bears set to lose key player before playoffs to nasty injury

While the Bears cannot earn the NFC’s No. 1 seed after a 42-38 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football”, Chicago can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win over the Lions or a Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Washington Commanders.

The Bears are taking a different approach than the defending Super Bowl champs who plan to rest their starters against the Commanders. Chicago plans to play its starters against the Lions on Sunday.

However, Bears head coach Ben Johnson provided a cryptic update on wide receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III for Sunday.

During his news conference on Wednesday, Johnson told reporters that the Bears plan to “see how this week goes” with Odunze’s foot before deciding if he’ll play Detroit. Chicago is “hopeful” Burden can play on Sunday, as the wide receiver suffered a quad injury on the final play of the loss to the 49ers.

The Chicago Bears don’t want to rush Rome Odunze back

More News: Lions could be plotting big-time revenge on Ben Johnson

Johnson’s answer seemed to indicate the Bears don’t plan to rush Odunze back too quickly, especially with the postseason upcoming the next weekend. However, Johnson made it clear Chicago wants to beat Detroit badly on Sunday.

The Bears want to get the bad taste of a 52-21 loss to the Lions in Week 2 out of their mouth before the postseason. More importantly, Johnson believes his team needs to avoid dropping two straight games before making a playoff appearance.

Momentum is key for the core young group.

“Once again, we’re coming off a loss that none of us are very happy about,” Johnson said. “And really, our emphasis is on getting ourselves fixed, getting our corrections made, and we don’t want to have that feeling again this week.”

The Bears offense played efficiently without Odunze against the 49ers, but his absence loomed on the final drive when quarterback Caleb Williams missed the opportunity to throw to his physically gifted target near the goal line.
