Chicago Bears receive big help from Chiefs for new stadium

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) scrambles as Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat (98)

Last week, the Chicago Bears pulled a surprise when CEO and president Kevin Warren revealed the team would explore Northwest Indiana as a potential spot to build a new stadium.

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago have been less than helpful in helping the Bears to get what they need to build in the state. The stadium will not be a priority for Illinois in 2026.

Warren decided to pit Indiana against Illinois in his letter to the public.

“The stakes for Illinois are significant: thousands of union jobs, year-round attractions and global events made possible by a fixed roof stadium that would provide long-term revenue for the State,” Warren wrote. “For a project of this scale, uncertainty has significant consequences.

“Stable timelines are critical, as are predictable processes and elected leaders, who share a sense of urgency and appreciation for public partnership that projects with this level of impact require. We have not received that sense of urgency or appreciation to date.”

Warren suggested the pivot to Indiana wasn’t leverage, but it’s hard to see that play as anything but a negotiating tactic for the Bears.

However, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to use Kansas as a negotiating tactic to get Missouri to help with their project in Kansas City. The Chiefs ultimately decided to move to Kansas.

Per Eben Novy-Williams, the Chiefs will receive $1.8 billion in public money for their $3 billion stadium. It’s the largest public subsidy for a sports stadium in the United States.

As Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated pointed out, it’s becoming common for league teams to put states against each other for better subsidies.

“This is similar to the Panthers pitting North and South Carolina against each other, or the Commanders doing the same with Virginia, Maryland and DC, or even the Patriots threatening to go to Rhode Island or Connecticut back in the day,” Breer posted on X. “State lines = Assets for billionaires.”

Illinois has to wonder if the Bears have the gumption to follow through with a threat to leave the state for Indiana. But seeing the Chiefs leave for Kansas has to give some state leaders worry.

At the very least, the stadium project might become more of a priority for Illinois in 2026.
